General Summary of Duties: Provides ultrasound diagnostic tests for patients as ordered by the physicians. Conducts scanning procedures using ultrasound equipment. Requires knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy and physiology to pinpoint area of imaging.
Examples of Duties: (This list may not include all of the duties assigned)
- Performs ultrasonic diagnostic procedures as ordered by physicians.
- Explains procedures to assure cooperation and optimum test results.
- Positions patients. Selects appropriate transducer.
- Conducts scanning procedures using ultrasound equipment. Moves scanner over specified body area., and adjusts equipment to focus.
- Makes hard copy images. Documents tests.
- Develops film using automatic film processing equipment. Assembles materials of radiologist or physician (interpreting) exam.
- Maintains ultrasound equipment and stocks all ultrasound supplies.
- Prepares patients for physician and assists during examination.
- Assists in maintaining department records, reports and files.
- Maintains patient confidentiality.
- Performs related work as required.
Education: High school diploma or GED. Completion of course in ultrasonic technology (2 years) and/or 2 year radiology degree and 1 year Ultrasound training.
Experience: Minimum of one year or more experience as an Ultrasound Sonographer preferred. Computer experience required.
License/Certificate: Must be registered in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (RDMS).
