CLASSIFICATION:  Extra Part-Time Auxiliary Police Special Events Monitor

GRADE: NB6

RATE OF PAY: $19.56 per hour

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs a wide variety of tasks in preparing for, setting up equipment, assisting the public, answering questions, giving directions, customer aide, pedestrian and vehicular traffic control, hauling and carrying and collecting barricades, signs, and such, assisting public safety staff, breaking down, sweeping, cleaning up, and stowing equipment associated with municipal special events in parks and public streets; does related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: An employee in this class follows an established routine; they set up for, work during, and clean up after special events of the Borough. Their goal is to provide citizen aide and assistance so as to facilitate a good and safe experience for all at special events. An Auxiliary Police Special Event Monitor must also enforce Borough rules and regulations, and to provide the public with a wide variety of information regarding borough and municipal facilities, give directions, and solve day-to-day problems without immediate supervision. General supervision is received from the Police Chief, or his designee, who will schedule and assign an Auxiliary Police Special Event Monitor to specific tasks and locations before each special event.

Special Events are often on holidays and weekends, day and night, and an employee in this class must be available whenever needed and often when others are off work or celebrating or vacationing.

Often, compensation for these employees is charged back to event organizers on a work order.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative only)

Hauls special event equipment and sets up according to rules and directions;

Directs pedestrian and vehicular traffic as allowed by law;

Advises the public concerning matters of special event information and directions;

Monitors the special event area for damage to public equipment and facilities;

Administers Borough and event rules and regulations;

Directs traffic and checks parking areas;

Closes and opens buildings and locks;

Checks permits;

Communicates with vendors, organizers, event participants with respect to proper service;

Monitors for illegally parked cars and keeps fire lanes clear for emergency response;

Radios for police help in emergencies such as serious injuries, disorderly conduct, lost children, etc.

Sweeps, cleans, stows, and carries equipment after special events;

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to readily acquire working knowledge of departmental regulations, Borough ordinances and State statutes pertaining to parks, streets, parking, and public safety. Ability to successfully complete basic life saving (i.e. CPR) classes and to become a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation certified traffic control flagger; some working knowledge of streets, parking, park, and public facility maintenance practices and procedures; ability to use radio and similar communication equipment pursuant to proper use policies; ability to anticipate and solve problems on a daily basis; ability to establish and maintain above average public relations including a requirement to talk with and explain things to strangers, visitors, and others; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; willingness and physical ability to walk extensively, and perform outdoor duties under varying work and climatic conditions; good physical condition.; ability to lift and haul 50 lbs or more in equipment for several hours. Must have current driver’s license with a clean driving record prior to hire for no less than 3 years.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: All employees in this class must complete any training that the Chief of Police may prescribe from time to time, Extensive public contact work, facility maintenance experience, above average communication skills, assertiveness, responsible work ethic including but not limited to timeliness, public appearance and ability to listen, learn, and follow directions precisely; and preferably graduation from high school or a GED; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Prefer to be a member of or ability to become a member of the Borough Fire Police traffic control squad.
