What are the responsibilities and job description for the Climate Communications Specialist position at Boulder County?
The ideal candidate is a skilled writer able to create effective educational outreach materials, presentations, newsletters, and web, social, and digital content. This role will support OSCAR community engagement efforts and utilize communications, equity, and language access best practices to create high-impact, innovative messaging to engage a wide audience, with particular focus on underserved communities disproportionally impacted by the climate crisis. The position will garner support for departmental initiatives, promote participation in OSCAR programs, and raise public awareness of funding opportunities that directly influence OSCAR’s ability to achieve its goals.
This is a full-time, benefitted position. The work schedule is Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm. This position will work in-person at the Courthouse West Wing, located at 2020 13th St., Boulder, CO 80302. Under FLSA guidelines, this position is exempt.
Boulder County requires its employees to reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work.
Hiring Salary Range: $67,944.00 - $82,896.00 Annually
TENTATIVE HIRING TIMELINE:
- First Round Interviews: February 28th - March 3rd
- If invited to an interview, applicants will be required to submit examples of previous written, graphic design, video, social media, and/or web communications work
- Synthesize technical information to write engaging copy for general audiences (press releases, presentations, briefings, social media, and web content)
- Write, edit, and manage internal and external newsletters
- Manage and edit web content through WordPress
- Participate in relevant communication workgroups to ensure messages are consistent across county departments and partner organizations
- Record, edit, and distribute virtual meetings
- When needed, support Climate Communications Manager with community and media relations, graphic design, video production, and subject matter expert and community member interviews
- Performs related work, as required
- May be reassigned during emergency situations

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Boulder County is looking for well qualified candidates to fill our positions. Any combination of relevant education and experience is encouraged. In this position, we are looking for a minimum of 6 years of combined education and experience, with at least 2 years of professional communications work experience.
- Bachelor's Degree in a field related to communications, public relations, marketing, graphic design, climate science, or sustainability
- Demonstrated professional writing experience
- Professional experience in the fields of climate communications, climate justice, and/or science communication
- Basic understanding of graphic design best practices
- Basic understanding of community-based, digital, and/or traditional marketing best practices
- Understanding of graphic design theory and community based social marketing
- Experience creating and editing website content using WordPress
- Experience managing and/or creating high-impact content across social platforms including Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, Nextdoor, and/or TikTok
- Experience using Adobe Creative Suite software
- Bilingual in Spanish and English
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
- Expert writing and copyediting skills with an understanding of how to optimize messaging for different audiences and platforms
- A mission-driven mindset and desire to tackle climate action in Boulder County
- An understanding of equity and inclusion with professional and/or lived experience working with people from diverse backgrounds, communities of color, and/or under-resourced communities
- An understanding of contemporary communications strategies and best practices that inspire behavior change
- Knowledge of the global and local context of the climate crisis in media; including the intersections of current events, climate justice, popular culture, scientific innovation, and technology
- An ability to work collaboratively across departments and with external organizations
- A willingness to grow, innovate, analyze, and improve processes or procedures
