Job Description
The Social/Emotional Counselor will provide counseling resources and information to club members, parents, and caretakers; council members with personal and psychological issues; and address relevant issues, such as school attendance, illegal drugs, teen pregnancy, at-risk behaviors, grade transition, depression, divorce, domestic violence, and social adjustment issues. The Social/Emotional Counselor will work with members in one-on-one setting and in groups.
Responsibilities and Duties:
● Counseling students with personal and psychological issues that affect their performance, behavior, and socialization.
● Providing counseling sessions, treatment plans, or group sessions as necessary and establishing prevention programs and intervention plans
● Communicating regularly with members to determine the areas in which they may need assistance or counseling.
● Providing information when appropriate to outside support services to help members with economic, emotional, family, or physical issues.
● Assisting at-risk members
● Communicating with parents, teachers, and non-instructional staff to understand members’ challenges.
● Maintaining case file and reports to track members progress and problems
● Helping students and families by providing community resources such as shelters, food banks and medical care.
● Train and coach staff on trauma-informed practices, behavior management techniques, effective positive reinforcement, and other needed professional development topics to allow all Youth Development Professionals to be effective.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
● Bachelor or Master’s degree in mental health, counseling or related field. Will consider someone in graduate school or years of experience.
● License and certification to practice social work (preferred, not required)
● Valid State driver’s license and fingerprint clearance prior to employment.
● 1-2 years of experience working with children and adolescence, in a childcare setting.
● Knowledge of child development concepts and practices
● Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (written and spoken)
● Understand the requirements of mandatory reporting.
Essential Duties:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty listed in job description. Developing behavior management plans, safety plans, facilitate group sessions, staff trainings and other programming essentials. Follow all program guidelines listed in the grant requirements to report outputs and outcomes from goals and objectives. Report directly to the Chief Executive Officer and Club/Unit Directors. Attend weekly, monthly, and quarterly meetings.
