What are the responsibilities and job description for the Speech and Debate Coach (Brentwood High School) position at Brentwood School District?
Brentwood High School seeks a highly qualified applicant to assist the head coach in providing supervisory and instructional leadership to a state and nationally competitive speech and debate team. This person must be willing to spend after school hours coaching at practices and weekend hours at competitive tournaments. In addition to coaching, this position may require the recruitment of a highly diverse group of students, helping the head coach with organization of paperwork for weekend tournaments, and a sensitivity and understanding of teenagers in competitive situations.
REPORTS TO: Building Athletic Director
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Experience working with a diverse population of children preferred
- Experience with Speech and Debate preferred
Terms of Employment
JOB CLASSIFICATION: Non-Certified
SHIFT TYPE: Extra Pay/Extra Duty
HOURS PER DAY/WEEK: Varies depending on the season
SCHEDULE: August - June
Responsibilities may include:
- Stay informed on rules, procedures, and judging standards for speech and debate events
- Occasionally judge for tournaments
- Supervise students in the evenings and weekends at practices and competitive events along with the head coach
- Read student speeches, pieces, etc and offer feedback and advice
- Analyze and evaluate student speeches and performances through in person practice or video
- Promote the program in the community through media and district communications outlets
- Acquire literary materials and resources for student speeches and performances
- Conduct practice activities and drills to continuously improve student performance
- Encourage students to use their speaking skills in the community and in their classrooms
- Develop a competitive speech and debate team in a small school environment
