What are the responsibilities and job description for the Hospital Navigator position at Brewster/EasCare Ambulance?
Primary Function
As an employee of Brewster Ambulance, and under the supervision of the Operations Manager(s), the Navigator is responsible for the following:
- Expediting patient discharges
- Enabling hospital to admit patients in accelerated fashion
- Outstanding On-Time-Performance
- Reducing Time-On-Task
- Providing exceptional service to our customers
- Increasing operational efficiency of our team
Through these points of focus, Navigators will create a fluid discharge process for the hospital, our team, and especially the patient.
Roles and Responsibilities
Functional Duties
- Proactively reviews upcoming calls and resolves any discrepancies that may arise
- (Ex: CAD & EPIC inconsistencies)
- (Ex2: Incorrect patient name, location, destination, equipment, discharge time, )
- Monitors CAD status times at respective hospital – (especially At Scene)
- Obtains list of potential/verified discharges for the day from Case Managers
- Relays the information to the Communications Supervisor
- Corresponds with hospital staff to ensure discharge volume is spread across the day as much as possible
- Communicates with nursing staff (Unit Secretary Discharging Nurse) to:
- Ensure all discharge paperwork is complete
- Verify any specialized orders are collected (MOLST, Section 12)
- Certify applicable medical equipment is withdrawn (IV’s, Catheters, )
- Validate patient has key/means to access drop-off location (if applicable)
- Touches base with dispatch to obtain ETA of the discharging ambulance
- Responds to the Brewster Team in a timely, and efficient manner
- Supports team where necessary Auxiliary Duties
- Works cooperatively with Billing Department
- In order to resolve any discharges on the HOLDS list in a timely manner
- Ensures crew (ALS/BLS/CC) At Scene time is as low as possible
- Acts as a liaison between Brewster Management and Team in the field to enhance communication and efficiency
- Seeks feedback from Team on operational concerns, ideas, and overall suggestions
- All other duties as assigned

Among other areas, the Navigator will be expected to fulfill these primary expectations:
- Punctual; Navigator will arrive to workstation at scheduled start-time, and depart at scheduled end-time
- Dependability; Navigator will be available for all team members to rely on throughout the day
- Engagement; Navigator is expected to make contact with all Brewster crews who are in need of assistance
- Communication; Navigator will effectively communicate with the Brewster Team, and relay necessary information to the appropriate members
- Responsiveness; Navigator is expected to respond to Team communications within a timely manner
- Timeliness; Navigator is expected to complete deliverables in the appropriate amount of time
- Consistency; Navigator’s performance is reliable, and steady in nature
- Teamwork; Navigators will elevate the overall level of collaboration among all of those on the Brewster Team, and treat all with respect
- Customer Service; Navigator ensures that customers are utilizing proper Brewster channels of communication
- (i.e. Discharge requests booked through Brewster Call Center on recorded line, STAT calls through STAT portal, )
Qualifications
- Currently licensed EMD or EMT
- Minimum of 1 year experience in EMS
- CPR certified
- Extremely professional & self-motivated
- Proactive & communicative
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to assist, lift, and transfer patients onto and from stretchers
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
- Must be able to read, speak, and write in English
- No recent disciplinary action on file
Preferred Skills
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in an orderly and calm manner
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to think critically, problem solve, as well as motivate and direct Team personnel
- Possess a track record of trustworthiness and integrity to be an intermediary between contracted partners and Brewster
- Familiarity with CAD, ESO, Zoll RescueNet, and Streeteagle is a plus
- Ability to push and pull up to
- Must be able to work in weather conditions of geographical region
