Literacy Interventionist

Organizational Background: Bridge Prep is a unique, mission driven public charter elementary school on Staten Island dedicated to providing a student-centered educational option for our students, many of whom have dyslexia or other language-based reading difficulties, and who are in need of additional supports in order to meet academic proficiency. Our academic offerings are rooted in our commitment to the Science of Reading(SOR) and evidence-based instructional practices which provide all students with an academic experience focused on academic and personal growth through targeted support. All our staff members share the same belief that all students can learn, regardless of their differing learning styles or academic ability, if they are provided with the necessary and appropriate learning environment.

Position Description: Teachers are critical to achieving a culture of achievement at Bridge Prep and we continue to seek innovative, talented, and dedicated educators to bring their skills, experience, and energy to our collaborative, student-centered learning environment. We want our staff to be comprised of committed, dynamic, and innovative pedagogues. We are seeking a Literacy Interventionist to serve as a key instructional team member, who supports our lowest performing students by ensuring they are provided with a tiered system of literacy instruction, with increasing intensity and individualization.

Essential Functions:

  • Using data from the Reading Readiness Assessment and NWEA MAP Assessment to provide small group instruction and progress monitoring to targeted student populations.
  • Create a collaborative and supportive learning environment where all students can learn.
  • Provide direct, explicit literacy instruction in individual and/or small group settings to build students’ literacy skills and improve their academic performance. 
  • Use a variety of manipulatives and hands-on activities to support content standards and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  • Reinforce strategies used in the students’ traditional classrooms, focusing on gaps identified through analysis of student assessment data
  • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects using formal and informal assessment data obtained from students
  • Support the academic team in coaching teachers in effective SOR strategies and in reviewing data to identify and develop student groupings to increase literacy outcomes for all students.

Reporting: This is a full time position reporting to the School Leader or his designee.

Specific Qualifications:

  • A Master’s Degree.
  • A current New York State(or equivalent) teaching certification in Childhood Education(1-6) is required.
    • Valid NYS Certification (or equivalent) in Literacy or Literacy Specialist is preferred.
    • Valid NYS Certification (or equivalent) in Special Education is preferred.
  • A certification from Orton-Gillingham Academy or the International Dyslexia Association at the Associate Level or Dyslexia Interventionist is preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years teaching experience with demonstrated high margins of academic growth for diverse students. 
  • Experience in Science of Reading-aligned, standards-based curriculum.
  • Training in evidence-based structured literacy approaches to improve literacy outcomes including but not limited to Writing Revolution, Orton-Gilligham, LETTRS, Geodes, etc.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the Science of Reading, including effective implementation of the “Big 6” skills in daily instruction.
  • Experience with remediation strategies for students of varying ability levels.
  • Experience in data evaluation and applied decision making.
  • Ability to work autonomously, as well as take coaching as needed. 
  • Ability to excel in a fast paced, dynamic and exciting school.
  • Proven commitment and success working with students and families.

Salary: Compensation is commensurate with experience, ranging from $70,000-90,000 annually.
