Health Director/Nurse, BEAM Discovery NY

Bridge to Enter Advanced Mathematics (BEAM)
New York, NY Full Time
POSTED ON 4/30/2024

Bridge to Enter Advanced Mathematics (BEAM), a project of the Art of Problem Solving Initiative, Inc., is seeking a Nurse/Health Director to live on campus with our students during the BEAM Summer Away program. The role of Nurse/Health Director is a position that supports BEAM’s operations by fostering a healthy and positive environment for our students by safely handling medical conditions during the program.

This job is ideal for someone who wants to work in a low-risk environment this summer and loves kids. Our programs provide meaningful opportunities for middle school students with high potential in mathematics to build a community of learners in an immersive academic experience. We are required to have a health professional on-call and on-campus during the program, but while on-call you are free to do as you wish, giving you plenty of time to study, read, work on a project, or anything else you can do from campus. You're also welcome to join in our activities and bond with campers! Since we are an academic camp, we expect active responsibilities to generally be limited to times when students take medications and when they’re participating in outdoor and/or sports activities, with significant downtime even during on duty periods.

Key Responsibilities

Pre-Program Prep

Staff arrive on site a few days ahead of students’ arrival to engage in training, build community, and complete important set-up work. As a Health Director/Nurse, you can expect the following to occur over 1-2 days pre-camp and to have support from 1 additional staff nurse(s).

  • Review program safety plan; ensure all work is done in accordance with the safety plan
  • Review student medical records and verify that immunizations are up-to-date
  • Advise the Site Director of any medical conditions that require special attention
  • Attend staff training to learn procedures and give basic advice to staff for responding to medical issues
  • Set up the Nurse's Station, including unpacking and verifying necessary supplies are present and that the room is ready in time for student arrival
  • Meet each student as they arrive at the program site and collect any medications they brought with them

During the Program

During the program, you will be responsible for a combination of regular and urgent medical tasks, including those listed below. You can expect to be responsible for approximately 40-50 middle school students, although some of your work will be consultative as other staff are trained in first aid, with at least two other staff being trained in advanced first aid and CPR.

  • Direct self-administration of COVID tests by students.
  • Watch students self-administer medications
  • Administer First Aid as needed
  • Log all medical interactions
  • Consult on emergency situations
  • Administer CPR as needed
  • Use campus AED as needed
  • Refer students to urgent care and/or the emergency room as needed for diagnosis
  • Coordinate with another medical staff member, who will be on-site during your time off

Post-Program Wrap-Up

  • Supervise the return of medications to students at the conclusion of the program
  • Organize medical documents generated during the summer for archiving
  • Help pack up any remaining supplies or items at the Nurse’s Station

Qualifications

Above all, we're looking for people who are passionate about the work and impact of BEAM. It is much more important to us that we hire someone with the right approach than someone with a particular background.
