PRIMARY LOCATION : Fall River
REPORTS TO : Associate VP Admin / Facilities
POSITION STATUS : This is a full-time, state funded, AFSCME, unit-classified position with benefits.
CLASSIFICATION SPECIFICATION : Classification Study & Classification Specifications / Massachusetts Department of Higher Education
POSITION STATUS : This is a AFSCME Unit II, Grade 14, Step 1 position.
SALARY : $48,739 annually.*
- Appointments from outside the bargaining unit begin at Step 1.
- STATEMENT OF DUTIES : Incumbents of positions in this series apply paint, varnish and / or stain to all types of surfaces;
- prepare surfaces for painting; select types and colors of paint, varnish, or stain; mix, blend and prepare paints for proper color match;
erect stagings and scaffolding; and perform related work as required. The basic purpose of this work is to maintain, decorate and protect wood, metal, plaster, and other surfaces by applying paints, varnish and / or stains.
This position required physical stamina and endurance.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Applies paints, varnish, and / or stains to all surface types (e.g., wood, metal, plaster, etc.) to protect and beautify such surfaces using appropriate utensils and equipment such as paint spraying machines.
- Prepares surfaces for painting using appropriate tools, equipment, and techniques.
- Selects the types and color of paints, varnish or stain and mixes, blends, and prepares the same for proper color match.
- Erects, repairs, maintains and operates staging, rigging, and scaffolding following accepted safety practices to access areas needing painting.
- Estimates length of time, cost and quantities of materials and workforce needed to complete a job.
- Operates, cleans, and maintains hand and power tools, air compressors and painting equipment as required.
- Confers with supervisors and department heads regarding the scheduling of work, the handling of emergencies and the feasibility of installing painting equipment and materials in the area to ensure that needs of the agency are met expeditiously and at a convenient time.
- Prepares surfaces for plaster or cement work by taping joints on sheetrock, caulking and waterproofing walls and cracks in floor, etc.
by using appropriate tools and equipment.
- Performs related duties such as preparing various reports; maintaining records and files; setting up sign and barricades;
- reading instructions on lay-outs; removing and placing glass; drilling holes in signs; printing letters and signs; laying out drop cloths;
and moving office furniture.
Based on assignment, may operate road-line painting machines and sand blasting equipment; plaster ceilings and walls; clean gutters;
and / or load and unload furniture and supplies.

Requirements :
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS :
Applicants must have at least :
A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in painting work,
or (B) the substitution below.
Substitution :
A diploma or certificate from a recognized trade, technical or vocational school at the high school level or higher with a major in painting may be substituted for the required experience.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS :
Knowledge of the practices and techniques of painting, the types and uses of painting material such as paints, varnishes, stains, etc.
Knowledge of the practices and techniques of mixing and matching paints. Knowledge of the properties and characteristics of wood.
Knowledge of the methods of preparation of wood, metal, glass, plaster, cement and other materials and surfaces for painting.
- Knowledge of and skill in using painting tools such as brushes, rollers, spray machine guns, hand and power-operated paint chippers, sand blasting equipment etc.
- Knowledge of and skill in using small hand tools such as hammers, saws, screwdrivers, chisels, drills, and hand held power tools such as power saws, power drills, power hammers, etc.
- Knowledge of and skill in using safety or climbing equipment used in painting such as scaffolds, ladders and rigging. Knowledge of the safety practices and procedures followed in painting.
- Knowledge of chemical solvents used to prepare surfaces for painting and cleanup.
- Knowledge of and skill in applying types of finishes used in painting with brush, cloth, air gun, etc.
- A valid driver's license.
- Reliable transportation.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and give them precisely, and understandably.
- Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.
- Ability to climb and work from ladders and scaffolds; to stand for prolonged periods of time; to lift and carry objects.
- Maintain accurate records.
- Must be reliable and responsible.
- Work independently and exercise sound judgment, as well as adjust to changing situations to meet changing program or production requirements.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

- Ability to speak a language in addition to English.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT :
gas and fumes; work on ladders and / or scaffolding at heights greater than 10 feet; lift and carry heavy
objects; may be exposed to high-speed vehicular traffic; may work in confined areas; may work varied
shifts, weekends and nights; and may be subject to a standby (on call) work status.
