Brookhaven currently has an opening for a second Child/Family Counselor. With small caseloads, strong support, and qualified supervision, this position is especially suited to recent graduates seeking their first job as a clinician and working toward licensure

The Child/Family Counselor position assists Brookhaven youth and staff across all programs including educational, residential, and clinical. The Child/Family Counselor develops treatment plans and provides therapy to a full caseload of assigned clients while collaborating with significant others both inside and outside of the program to ensure progress. This position requires a Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work (clinical), Marriage and Family Therapy or related discipline with experience or coursework in working with children preferred.

Provide constant safety and supervision of children.

Provide a therapeutic milieu that supports the children in working on treatment goals.

Communicate and interact effectively with all team members.

Adapt to changing situations while carrying out all assigned duties.

Support the philosophy and mission of the program.

Demonstrate regular on-time attendance.

Respond positively to supervision and constructive feedback.

Maintain accurate and timely documentation as well as confidentiality of client information.

Follow all Brookhaven policies and standards of care.

Adopt a professional demeanor and work habits while providing effective counseling, performing assigned duties, and acting as part of a multidisciplinary team at Brookhaven.

Physical Demands

The Clinician position could at times be physically demanding and may involve situations such as frequent standing, walking, running, kneeling, engaging in recreational activities with youth, and intervening in crisis situations. Employment may be conditioned on passing an initial physical ability screening and maintaining this level of ability. Work Environment

Brookhaven strives to provide a professional work setting that is respectful, courteous, and supportive for all employees. The specific work environment associated with the Clinician position can be variable. The job may sometimes involve exposure to outside weather conditions and indoor noise levels that can become moderate to loud. In working with multiple youth residing at Brookhaven with specialized mental health needs, employees may encounter children who have challenging behaviors and who can become verbally abusive or physically aggressive. At the same time, staff may encounter conditions typical of caring for youth in any setting such as children becoming ill with colds and flu or exposing staff to bodily fluids. At all times, safety is a priority and staff receive considerable training, supervision, and support as well as protective equipment when needed to help manage and mitigate any risks arising from these conditions.

The work schedule of the Clinician is typically Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. It is understood that exact hours may sometimes fluctuate or be adjusted depending on the needs of the program. Additionally, on-call duties are rotated between the Clinician and other administrative or clinical staff with each maintaining after-hours availability approximately one week each month.

Job Responsibilities/Duties (may include but are not limited to the following):

Assist in providing a constant safe and supportive environment for our youth.

Develop treatment, behavioral, and crisis plans for clients and support them in meeting program expectations and individual goals.

Provide individual, group, and family counseling to residents and day students as assigned.

Utilize trauma informed, child-centered approaches in establishing treatment plans, conducting therapy, and maintaining positive interactions with youth.

Motivate youth through effective communication and evaluative feedback.

Communicate with families, guardians, and team members regarding progress.

Consult with psychiatrist/prescriber during monthly meetings or as directed.

Assist educational and residential staff with developing and implementing effective interventions.

Rotate and maintain availability during on-call responsibilities and clinical emergencies.

Collect data and maintain all necessary records associated with duties.

Provide monthly reports to Clinical Coordinator as assigned.

Make corrections to and file/distribute clinical reports in a timely manner.

Attend staff meetings and sessions with supervisor as scheduled.

Safeguard client privacy and confidentiality.

Complete all required training to maintain skills and credentials.

Follow all ethical codes, licensing regulations, and recognized standards for counseling professionals.

Adhere to Brookhaven’s defined policies and procedures.

Perform other duties as assigned or as directed by supervisor.
