Networks, Integration & Automation (NIA)
As an engineer at Burns & McDonnell, you will receive on-the-job training, technical mentorship, and personal development on your way to becoming a key part of our nationwide team that supports the following projects:
Grid Modernization: Now, more than ever, reliable and secure communication for grid operations is essential. We work with electric utilities to expand their capabilities with the latest technologies for remote monitoring, automation, and control to improve their operational efficiency.
Networks: We help our clients build redundant, long-haul, high-capacity data networks via a variety of technologies that are used for both business/IT needs as well as the day-to-day operational needs that keep the lights on.
Renewable Energy: With the expansion of renewable energy technologies, our team works to connect these assets to electric grid infrastructure to provide critical communications for the local utility and system operator in areas such as offshore wind, solar photovoltaic (PV), hydroelectric power, and battery storage.
Rural Broadband: As engineers, we have a social responsibility to support our communities. Our NIA team works to help our clients provide high-speed internet access to rural communities to advance educational and economic opportunities and help close the digital divide.
Private LTE: We are supporting development of entirely private carrier-grade networks for electric utilities, unlocking new capabilities to monitor and manage the grid and ultimately better serve customers. Private LTE is one application of many within our wireless portfolio.
Fiber: Fiber optic infrastructure is one of the fastest ways that utilities transmit high-bandwidth data, and our team is helping to expand that infrastructure from their core networks all the way to customer homes.
Electric Vehicles: We work with industry leaders and electric utilities to help our customers transition to beneficial and cost-effective transportation electrification.
Job Duties
Assist in designing telecommunications networks utilizing client standards or developing new standards.
Assist with project deliverables such as: bill of materials, specifications, yard layouts, equipment plans, sections and details, wiring diagrams, control building arrangements, DC calculations, cable lists, SCADA points lists, device configuration files, network architecture diagrams, channel plans, RF path studies, and cutover plans.
Assist in execution of complex assignments requiring the use of advanced tools and techniques, resulting in the development of new or improved processes, equipment and/or technological methods.
Identify, communicate, and assist in resolving issues on projects as needed.
Adhere to established project schedule to meet deadlines.
Work closely with the project team to ensure deliverables and services are being provided to client’s satisfaction and that projects are following internal QA/QC guidelines.

Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program.
Or Bachelor of Science in Electrical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
Master of Science degree in Engineering may be substituted for one year of experience.
Successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) strongly preferred.
Previous internship and/or related experience preferred.
Basic knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite)
Basic computer skills include AutoCAD, MicroStation, 2D and 3D rendering programs and other analysis programs.
Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem solving skills.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without requiring future sponsorship for employment visa status.
