This position receives technical guidance and administrative direction from the Chief Plant Design Engineer or designee. Prepares studies, sketches, drawings and models of equipment arrangements and piping layouts. Performs a variety of computer-based modeling, design and planning tasks on project(s). Receives project direction from a more experienced Engineer, Designer, Project Engineer or Project Manager. Participates in assignments and training that will develop work knowledge and abilities through the application of standard engineering and design techniques, procedures and criteria. Applies standard engineering and design techniques to solve complex design problems. All work is required to be performed in a safe manner. Industries served include refineries, chemical plants and other industrial facilities.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  1. Develop equipment arrangements utilizing vendor data and design criteria.
  2. Create piping layouts and 3d models for complex systems independently, utilizing P&ID's, pipe spec's, EA's, and vendor data. 
  3. Identifies and obtains information needed from and by other departments for coordination purposes. Understands design authority of all engineering departments. Resolves coordination conflicts effectively, negotiating win-win solutions to multi-discipline project design issues.
  4. Ensures accuracy, completeness and consistency in the work produced in concert with project team objectives and customer expectations.
  5. Identifies and presents department-specific alternatives to multi-discipline design issues. Initiates discussion within the project team to arrive at design solutions that give the best value for a limited constructed cost.
  6. Works within engineering schedules and budgets to meet project objectives. With appropriate guidance, develops project recovery plans when needed.
  7. Plans field trips and coordinates with Plant Operations, Maintenance and Engineering to gather field information for project team. Establishes detailed project scope based on preliminary scope and evaluation of field conditions.
  8. With assistance, establishes project design basis. Develops alternatives to resolve complex design problems. Presents well-reasoned recommendations.
  9. Initiates and controls coordination efforts for areas of technical responsibility on projects.
  10. Plans tasks for self and support staff. Follows through to ensure delegated tasks are completed satisfactorily.
  11. Prepares models, drawings and design sketches using related documents.
  12. Uses vendor documents, coordination prints, surveys and models to check dimensions, determine interface points, determine physical space requirements, and provide information to other departments.
  13. Applies department-specific standards and procedures to design activities. Offers improvements to these documents.
  14. Contacts clients independently to obtain information or resolve design issues. Identifies work opportunities with existing clients. Interacts socially with clients.
  15. Ensures vendor submittals meet intended use. Participates in multi-discipline review of vendor documents. Assists in resolving conflicting comments. Considers impact associated with requested changes.
  16. Identifies, communicates and manages changes to project scopes. Recognizes impact of changes on other departments and constructed cost. Informs project management of pertinent issues and trends.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Continued)

 

  1. Creates plan of execution anticipating the sequence of tasks, long lead and special items for engineering procurement cycle, and dependencies of information from others. Works within project team to integrate department plan into a multi-discipline project plan of execution.
  2. Controls and coordinates multi-discipline usage of above ground physical space with other disciplines.
  3. Has knowledge of national, state and local codes, industry standards and client standards. Knows how to locate and apply current versions.
  4. Creates lists of deliverables and tasks, and estimates effort hours for same, based on limited scopes of work. Identifies staffing and skill levels required.
  5. Takes notes to document department-specific issues, decisions and needs on projects. Documents all phone calls, field trips, meetings attended, etc. Proactively shares project information through both verbal and written communications.
  6. With appropriate support, ensures designs are constructable. Considers construction techniques, limitations and relative costs. Field-verifies department designs.
  7. Prepares analyses and calculations with appropriate guidance.
  8. Ensures drafting meets client and C&I CAD standards. Interacts with C&I's clients to resolve CAD issues. Coordinates expectations with project team members and client coordinators.
  9. Coordinates with Project Controls to establish the level of input required for cost estimate bases. Prepares material take-offs and compiles material summary sheets. Verifies completeness of capital cost estimate compared to MTOs.
  10. Serves as a mentor to junior staff. Assists in training and development of others.
  11. Provides input to CSA project lead for development of subcontract scopes including compiling team needs for field investigation and testing, including surveys, laser scanning, geotechnical reports and exploratory excavations.
  12. Uses C&Is Engineering Instructions and Project Management Instructions and follows Project Procedures Manual.
  13. Provides input for construction sequence requirements (Pre-TAR, TAR, Post-TAR).
  14. Provides detailed input on Associate performance for formal performance evaluations as requested.
  15. Provide construction support.

 

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Individual may perform other duties as assigned, including work in other functional areas to cover absences or relief to equalize peak work periods or otherwise to balance the workload.

Capable of leading small-size projects (2-3 person teams).

Technology Computer literate and applies technology to solve problems and complete tasks.

  • Experienced with word processing and spreadsheet applications.
  • Proficient using AutoCAD or Microstation.

 

WORK REQUIREMENTS:

Satisfactory performance of this position will require:

  • A normal work week includes 40 or more hours depending on project needs, inclusive of C&I Core Business Hours.
  • Additional weekend work and extended workday hours may be required to meet project commitments.
  • Overnight travel that could consist of several sequential days.
  • Travel to and from job site that could exceed the normal work day.
  • Occasionally working in an operating industrial plant including construction and start-up support. This may require extended out-of-town assignments.
  • Must comply with drug-free workplace requirements.
  • Must be able to obtain Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) and pass any background checks.
  • Performs work in a safe manner in accordance with C&I and client requirements.


TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Job qualifications are generally obtained from the following:

  • Graduation from a two-year technical college with specialized training in computer aided mechanical or architectural drafting and design, AND 15 years of related work experience.

OR, Graduation with a Bachelor's degree or higher from a four-year non-ABET accredited engineering program, OR, a bachelor's degree or higher from a four-year engineering technology program, AND 13 years of related work experience.

  • Related work experience includes preparing construction documents in a multi-discipline engineering environment demonstrating a progressive increase in responsibility and technical difficulty of work.
  • Develops technical and leadership skills through independent self-development, formal training and on-the-job opportunities.
  • Experience in gathering field information and developing field sketches. 
  • Understanding of AutoCAD, CADWorx.
  • Must qualify for TWIC Card and DISA upon employment. 

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Valid Drivers License; SPED PPD Level 3 certification strongly encouraged.
