POSITION SUMMARY:
Working under direction of the Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) Manager, the Environmental Health and Safety Assistant conducts training on various safety topics, conducts internal EHS inspections, gathers data, and assists with proper characterization and storage of special wastes. This position works primarily at the Cedar Avenue Recycling and Transfer Station.
PRINCIPAL JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- At the direction of the EHS Manager conducts inspections of work areas, facilities, and work practices and procedures for compliance with established policies; and prepare records and reports of findings.
- Assists in providing safety training in Spanish on appropriate health and safety topics.
- Learns how to operate, maintain, and calibrate monitoring and testing equipment.
- Conducts routine self-monitoring inspections for facility compliance with Spill Prevention Countermeasure Control (SPCC) and Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP).
- Learns how to conduct surveys of facilities and operations to identify potentially hazardous conditions and safety hazards with equipment, materials, apparatus, wiring, structures, vehicles, grounds, and other activities; and maintain records of survey results.
- Logs data and photographs in the EHS Data Management System.
- Serves on safety committees as requested.
- Assists with the completion of customer diversion reports as requested.
- Assists with the sorting of household hazardous waste into appropriate containers for storage and transport.
- Participates in company professional development and training.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Effective oral and written communications skills, in English and Spanish, to interact and communicate policies and procedures to faculty staff and customers.
- Ability to work effectively with managers, supervisors, employees, and customers.
- Ability to wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary.
- Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of the program.
- Ability to lift and move up to 50-pounds in an ergonomically correct posture.
- Some knowledge of laws and regulations concerning solid waste facilities and solid waste handling.
- Ability to obtain certification in 40-Hour HAZWOPER training within one year of hire.
- Ability to complete OSHA 30 Hour Construction Training within one year of hire.
REQUIRED ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bilingual Spanish-English
- Experience conducting training or presenting information to small groups.
EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma
- One-year experience in waste management, recycling, construction, or manufacturing industry.
- Clean driving record.
- Demonstrated ability to identify work cooperatively with all levels of staff within the company
- Ability to complete tasks with limited supervision
- Ability to work in fast paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle and prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines
- Proficient data entry skills
- Microsoft Office skills
