POSITION: Environmental Health and Safety Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY:
Working under the direction of the Director and Environmental Health and Safety this person will conduct inspections and audits of facilities and equipment, develop and provide training on a variety of safety topics, assist in the development of environmental health and safety policies, write and update plans, policies, and programs. This position will conduct activities at the Cedar Avenue Recycling and Transfer Station, Orange Avenue Disposal facility, Industrial Waste and Salvage, and RedRock Environmental.
PRINCIPAL JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conducts inspections of work areas, facilities, and work practices for compliance with established policies and regulations. Prepares reports of findings from inspections.
- Develops training materials on various health and safety topics.
- Learns how to operate, maintain, and calibrate monitoring and testing equipment.
- Conducts routine self-monitoring inspections for facility compliance. Examples include Spill Prevention Countermeasure Control (SPCC) and Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP).
- Accompanies regulatory inspectors from state and local agencies while they are onsite.
- Conducts surveys of facilities and operations to identify potentially hazardous conditions including hazards with equipment, materials, apparatus, wiring, structures, vehicles, grounds, and other activities; and maintains records of survey results.
- Assists with the configuration, use, and reporting of data in the EHS Data Management System.
- Provides staff support and helps to lead various safety committees as requested.
- Assists with the completion of customer waste diversion reports as requested.
- Assists with the sorting of household hazardous waste into appropriate containers for storage and transport.
- Participates in company professional development and training.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in environmental health and safety or related discipline and one year of related experience in environmental health and safety or related field. Four years of experience implementing programs, coordinating activities, and overseeing functions in the waste management industry may be substituted for this requirement.
- Effective oral and written communications skills to interact and communicate environmental health and safety procedures to staff, managers, and customers.
- Ability to work effectively with managers, supervisors, employees, and customers in a fast-paced changing environment.
- Ability to work independently on projects, collect data, draw conclusions, and make recommendations to management on environmental health and safety topics.
- Ability to wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary.
- Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of the program. Ability to lift and move up to 50-pounds in an ergonomically correct posture.
- Knowledge of laws and regulations concerning solid waste facilities and solid waste handling.
- Knowledge of laws concerning workplace environmental health and safety.
- Possess, or can obtain in six months, certification in 40-Hour HAZWOPER.
- Complete Hazmat Transportation Training Course within 6 months of hire.

- Bilingual Spanish-English
