THE DEPARTMENT
The mission of the Cal Poly Pomona College of Engineering is to produce well-qualified engineering graduates ready for immediate and productive entry into the workforce or graduate studies. The college provides practice-oriented education based on sound engineering principles and applications while emphasizing the teamwork, communication, and creative skills needed to be leaders in a global society. The College of Engineering provides study opportunities to more than 5,000 undergraduate and graduate students in seven engineering departments, offering eleven programs leading to Bachelor of Science degrees in Aerospace, Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Industrial, Manufacturing, Mechanical, and Engineering Technology. In addition, graduate programs are offered for Master of Science degrees in Engineering (with emphasis in Aerospace Engineering), Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Management, and Mechanical Engineering. The undergraduate curricula are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission or the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET, Inc. (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Design, Maintain, and Install Equipment
- Develop equipment design and fabrication, maintain/repair and install department equipment, and annually inventory to verify with campus records.
- Maintain, calibrate, troubleshoot, and repair various electronic equipment in the department, including electronic instrumentation, microprocessors, electronic development systems, and related equipment.
- Work includes all technical functions from routine adjustment through modifications of equipment.
- Coordinate laboratory equipment setup, providing necessary connections with Facilities (e.g., compressed air, electrical, water, equipment cooling, IT data and internet connections, etc.).
- Develop analysis for the location and suitability of equipment.
- Coordinate existing equipment disposal/relocation and general lab refurbishment.
- Load and unload equipment and materials using forklifts, liftgates, and hand trucks.
- Design and construct specialized equipment for laboratory courses.
- Arrange for university or contractor services to modify or repair laboratory infrastructure and equipment.
- Coordinate with Information Technology (IT) to ensure that all computers function properly and the software is properly installed and periodically updated.
Support Faculty and Students
- Consult with faculty lab directors for equipment purchases, lab layouts, and lab safety.
- Act as a resource to department faculty in the safe operation of laboratory equipment. This includes demonstrating systems, helping students with projects, and preparing equipment setups for class demonstrations.
- Assist and consult with faculty for course, senior, and research projects.
- Check in/out, document, and maintain equipment for student senior and research projects related to lab activity.
- Offer training instruction to students on the safe use and operation of equipment.
- Demonstrate proper use of equipment in classes.
- Be available and accessible to help instructors solve problems with equipment during lab sessions.
- Develop equipment of a specialized nature to assist students and faculty.
Student Assistants
- Recruit, train, and supervise student assistants working in the department labs.
- Prepare student assistant work schedules.
- Oversee and assign work to student assistants.
Other Duties
- Provide technical support to the dean's office and department chair to develop lab upgrades, equipment, and assessment plans.
- Purchase and acquire equipment, supplies, and consumables as needed using purchase orders and P-cards.
- Reconcile P-card purchases each month.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Equivalent to three years of progressively responsible journey-level or skilled experience in the maintenance, repair, and operation of scientific or technical equipment in the specialty area to which assigned, including one year involving design modifications and fabrication of complex and highly technical equipment. OR
- Equivalent to two years of semi-skilled experience maintaining and repairing scientific or technical equipment or related equipment experience as part of instructional support activities may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
OR
- Equivalent to two years of trade school or technical arts training with specialization in the type of equipment repair to which assigned. completion of an apprenticeship program, or completion of a full military specialization in the required type of equipment maintenance and repair may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the methods. materials, tools, and equipment used in the construction, installation, and maintenance. repair and operation of equipment in the area of specialization; thorough knowledge of equipment design theory; knowledge of drafting techniques; thorough knowledge of repair, maintenance, troubleshooting, and overhaul.
- Ability to apply previous experience and knowledge to the design of new applications; ability to plan, organize, and coordinate the work of technical projects; ability to review and prepare specifications for technical equipment; ability to design, fabricate, and assemble devices; ability to coordinate equipment repair performed by other specialists; ability to analyze equipment problems and determine what repairs are needed; ability to install. replace, repair, and maintain a wide variety of equipment for the area of job assignment; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; ability to make arithmetic computations where required.
- The ability to train and supervise others.
- Special Qualifications: A Federal Communications Commission license is required for some positions.

- B.S. degree in engineering, engineering technology, or related science.
- Ability to keep inventory records, perform research to locate appropriate vendors, and prepare purchase requisitions for equipment, tools, and materials.

Comprehensive knowledge of electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and data collection systems in a test and research facility. Comprehensive knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the construction, installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of electrical and electronic equipment. Comprehensive knowledge of equipment repair, maintenance, and overhaul of equipment, and ability to perform complex troubleshooting of unique laboratory systems. Comprehensive knowledge of electrical design theory and ability to design new systems to meet research and educational needs. Knowledge of drafting techniques.
