Program Technician II - Hearing and Vision

Under the general direction of the Program Supervisor, coordinate, schedule, and conduct hearing and vision screenings for school children countywide. Interacts with school personnel, physicians, parents, and other agencies as necessary to provide referrals and perform follow-up, ensuring that vision and hearing problems are identified and treated as early as possible.

  • Coordinate, schedule, and provide vision and hearing screening for children per the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) periodicity guidelines.
  • Administer hearing- and vision-related clinics as needed, including assuring appropriate staffing levels and maintaining relevant medical records.
  • Provide referrals to other health care providers as appropriate.
  • Prepare billing, forms, and letters for school personnel, physicians, parents, and other agency contacts.
  • Generate all required state and local statistical reports within the established time frames.
  • Assure required equipment calibration, maintenance, and certification is performed.
  • Attend required MDHHS vision and hearing training/conferences annually, at a minimum.
 
General Duties and Responsibilities
  • Coordinate referrals with Children's Special Health Care Services staff as necessary.
  • Participate in team and general staff meetings. 
  • Participate in public health quality programs (e.g., Quality Improvement, Quality Assurance, Quality Control). 
  • Participation in emergency exercises and training required.
  • Assess own needs for professional growth and participates in education that increases knowledge and skills in area of responsibilities.
  • Adhere to established policies and procedures and maintains client confidentiality. 
  • Complete or assist with completion of required program reports, as needed. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Successful completion of the MDHHS vision and hearing training.  
  • One to two years of experience in a community health setting.
  • Computer skills necessary to effectively utilize word processing and database programs.
  • Strong interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with school officials and the general public in situations requiring tact and patience.
  • Ability to multi-task simultaneous projects requiring concentration and attention to detail with frequent distractions due to people or telephone calls.  
  • Physical ability to frequently transport items weighing up to forty pounds.  
  • A valid Michigan driver's license, an acceptable driving record, and a personal vehicle including proof of vehicle insurance are required.  
Working Conditions
  • Clinic/Office environment.
  • Travel may be required.
  • May have contact with infectious disease and exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
  • On-call availability to respond to emergencies (e.g., program-related and public health emergencies).
  • Extended workdays (beyond 8 hours/day) and weekends or holidays may be required. 
  • May encounter threatening people and other dangerous situations.
