Job Summary

The Associate Director for Black Student Success reports to the Chief of Operations and leads Black Student Success (BSS) efforts to broaden and improve academic success and associated outcomes for current and prospective students, including Black students, in collaboration with the Black Excellence Collegium (BEC). The Associate Director provides leadership for Black Student Success initiatives, including serving as the campus point of contact on matters related to Black student success, holistic student support, and closing opportunity and equity gaps in access, retention, and graduation; inter-divisional relationship building, community partnerships, and external and internal reporting responsibilities; oversight of data collection and analysis; and seeking external funding and oversight of internal funding opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead Black Student Success Initiatives, Division of Academic Affairs - Monitor and make recommendations related to the BSS Initiatives progress, effectiveness, improvements, and success based on rigorous assessment to reach program goals.
  • On and Off-campus Collaborations and Partnerships - Serves as the primary contact for the BSS initiatives. Build and maintain internal and external relationships.
  • Faculty, Staff, and Student Outreach Facilitation - Advocate for Black faculty, staff, and students in policy arenas.
  • Fiscal Oversight and Securing External Funding - Leads budgetary decision-making and provide oversight for BSS budget working closely with an appointed fiscal liaison, providing strong stewardship of financial resources.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Demonstrated ability to work in a culturally diverse population. Demonstrated knowledge of general principles, practices, and trends in serving prospective and/or current diverse college students, including those from low income, first -generation backgrounds and of African descent. Knowledge of undergraduate issues and academic complexity are strongly preferred. Demonstrated familiarity with the research process to guide student success efforts. It is strongly preferred that candidates have experience in academic advising and a working knowledge of CSULB rules and regulations. Should have the ability to interpret and apply all rules and regulations. Expected to show initiative and resourcefulness to interpret and implement activities that support student success.

Detailed oriented; skills in collecting and analyzing data are essential. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSULB administrators, and students is required. Ability and/or experience in managing daily operations in a fast-paced office environment, including ability to plan, organize, and execute a multitude of projects. Demonstrated knowledge of general principles, practices, and trends in communication, customer service skills. Skills to serve culturally diverse student populations. Academic advising for diverse student population. Capacity to provide direct supervision of paraprofessional staff. Interpersonal skills. Organizational skills. Academic advising. Capacity to develop programs.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Education and Experience

  • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a related field and four years of related experience required.

PREFERRED:

  • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree with upper or graduate coursework in counseling and guidance, human relations, or related fields and four years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas required.
  • Preferred master’s degree required in counseling or higher education or a related field.
  • Previous or current work experience serving racially and ethnically diverse college students.
  • Research experience at the undergraduate or graduate level (e.g. completion of a master 's thesis or dissertation or program evaluation experience, research and / or assessment program evaluation).

Physical Summary

Sedentary work - Involves mainly sitting. Walking and standing are minimal. Lifting is limited to lightweight objects. (10 pounds or less).

Compensation

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

Hiring Range: The hiring range for this position is $5,273 - $7,055 per month commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.

CSU Classification Salary : The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $5,273 - $9,537 per month.

Time Base

1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.

Duration of Appointment

This is a temporary position for one year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.

Additional Information
