Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the Manager of Grounds and Landscape Services and / or his designee, determines the need for and conducts operations related to the application of horticultural and pest control treatments to campus grounds and landscape and oversees maintenance, modification and replacements of the university irrigation systems.
Key Responsibilities
Coordinates schedules of chemical treatments with various leads and campus departments.
Dispense herbicides and train employees on the safe and effective means for application of chemical and herbicides. Maintain chemical use records and complete monthly reports of usage and applications of chemicals to the Department of pesticide regulation (DPR).
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the characteristics of the particular plant disease or weed condition to be treated, the living habits of the particular noxious animal or insect to be exterminated and the characteristics and resultant effects of poisons and sprays applied.
Thorough knowledge of available materials and control techniques. Thorough knowledge of county, State and Federal regulations governing the use of chemicals.
General knowledge of the environmental impact of certain chemicals and safety precautions when using these chemicals. General knowledge of the relationship of the environment to pests and their control.
Ability to recognize and properly treat horticultural and pest problems. Ability to operate and make minor repairs to spray equipment.
Ability to maintain accurate records and submit reports to appropriate agencies of the State and county concerning types and quantities of chemicals used and when they were applied.
Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position. Solid work history.
Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.
Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
Education and Experience
Equivalent to a high school diploma and two (2) two years of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or general grounds, with one year in specialized pest and / or spray control work required.
Relevant work experience in a university or large institutional setting preferred.
Physical Summary
Medium work - Job involves lifting heavy-weight objects (20-40 pounds) and / or 20% - 40% of the job involves standing, squatting, kneeling, or walking.
May require pushing or pulling objects within the weight limits.
Licenses / Certificates
CA Driver's License and possession of the appropriate State of California license required to perform pest control work.
Qualified Applicator license of pesticides issued by The Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR).
Category A - Residential, Industrial, and Institutional. Category B - Landscape Maintenance. Category F Aquatics preferred.
