Lead Groundsworkers provide journeyman level grounds maintenance work and oversee employees engaged in general landscaping and grounds maintenance work.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assign, lead and participate in the daily activities of a crew of grounds employees performing grounds work including coordinating pesticide applications and irrigation repairs with the irrigation lead. Assign duties fairly and based upon the immediate needs of your area. Pay proper attention to any work orders issued to you. Oversee and assist crew working on major grounds projects such as resodding, installation of sprinkler systems, campus wide pruning, major campus landscaping projects or graduation set up. May also oversee and assist in other grounds duties such as construction of flower beds, maintenance of drainage systems, resurfacing of athletic fields and facilities, removal of brush and trees, collection of trash and laying of concrete and asphalt.
- Perform routine inspections of the work assigned to your crew for accuracy ensuring it has been completed in a timely manner. Provide documentation of those routine inspections to the Landscape and Fleet Manager. Assist the Landscape and Fleet Manager with the annual evaluation of your crew. All evaluations are to be based solely upon the individual's attitude, initiative and ability.
- In coordination with the Landscape and Fleet Manager, establish priorities, set standards of quality for the campus and evaluate work needed for planting, turf and shrub care campus wide. Show knowledge and ability to properly plant and care for all types of turf, plants and trees for our planting zone. Demonstrate the ability to evaluate the work needs of your area and to follow through on the priorities to accomplish accepted standards of quality.
- Train new employees, and conduct ongoing training sessions for permanent employees. Direct staff in proper operational procedures. During inclement weather, conduct in-house training for crews on equipment operation, safety practices and work techniques. Hands-on training of riding equipment to be preceded by operating demonstration by lead worker or appropriate operator.
- Maintains an accurate inventory of all grounds supplies and tools. Maintains a record of all materials on hand and submits written inventory when requested.
- In coordination with the Landscape and Fleet Manager, prepares cost estimates and plans for installation of new systems and modification of existing systems.
- Able to read and follow specifications and working drawings. Prepares reports as required. Interpret effectively and explain clearly what has been or will be installed. Reports should be clear and concise.
- Other job related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience
- Two years of experience in planting, cultivating, and maintaining flowers and shrubs, or in general grounds maintenance work.
- A valid California driver's license.
Required Qualifications
- Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, and tools and equipment used in planting, cultivating, and caring for flowers, shrubs, lawns, and trees.
- General knowledge of common plant diseases, pests, and weeds.
- General knowledge of approved methods and materials used in their control and eradication, horticultural methods and materials and planting and growing requirements of plants commonly grown in California.
- Ability to lay out, coordinate, and oversee the work of others and provide training.
- Ability to interpret policies and explain methods and procedures.
- Ability to inspect and evaluate the work of others.
- Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the position.
- Ability to perform general gardening and grounds maintenance work.
Compensation and Benefits:
Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,544 - $4,650 per month
Classification Salary Range: $3,544 - $5,985 per month

Work status: Full-time/Non-Exempt/Probationary
Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (6:00 am - 2:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.

Background Check
Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
Driver's License Check
Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.
Physical Exam
Employment is contingent upon a candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs.

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
