THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics functions as an integral part of the educational environment at Cal Poly Pomona. Its primary mission is to provide student-athletes with experiences that encourage their mental, physical, social, and emotional development; enhance their capacity for working with others; and strengthen their decision making and leadership skills. The department also contributes to the campus community by conducting programs and presenting events in ways that effectively serve the public relations interests of the University and provide opportunities for entertainment and positive social interaction.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- This position works in conjunction with the Assistant Athletic Director, Sports Performance and has the experience and authority to make independent medical decisions. This position will be involved with program coordination and assist in program development, especially in the absence of a Head Athletic Trainer. This role will serve as the primary lead for the athletic training staff and provide training and direction to less experienced Athletic Trainers. Additionally, this position will be responsible for oversight for all athletic medical insurance related claims and serve as the direct contact for 3 spirits squads.
- Provide athletic training duties during pre-practice/pregame, during practices/competitions and post-game practices/competitions. These duties may include wrapping and tapping of suspect areas of potential injury, overseeing rehabilitation programs, referring and arranging for student-athletes for additional evaluation of medical issues, if needed, providing injury treatment procedures. Travel to away competitions to provide medical coverage for student-athletes. Game day services may also be required to support visiting team student-athletes. Develop and administer rehabilitation programs for athletic injuries, including assisting in scheduling and assigning students for therapy; coordinate athletic training programs and assist in program development, including coordinating training room operations; coordinate and provide direction and training student interns; coordinate drug prevention programs and applicable drug testing requirements for student athletes; assist coaches in designing and implementing conditioning programs; assist in maintaining insurance records and monitoring and verifying insurance billings; assist in developing and monitoring the program budget.
- Working with coaches, administrators and other campus departments: Ensure effective communication between coaching staff and university staff/administration. Provide medical and/or clinical impressions and guidelines to maintain a safe environment for practice and competition participation for student-athletes. Work with service vendors.
- Consulting Physicians: Refer student-athletes to local area specialized physicians for additional evaluation when needed. Monitor rehabilitation/injury care for student-athletes who are seeing physicians for injuries incurred during practice or competition.
- Documentation: Maintain up to date medical documentation for each student athlete. Inventory: Maintain and monitor supplies, ordering of additional supplies and/or equipment, assist in general maintenance of modalities and rehabilitation equipment.
- Support special events, student programming, CCAA, NCAA, Risk Management. Serve on campus, CCAA, NCAA committees.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Valid CA Driver’s License
- Equivalent to bachelor’s degree in athletic training, physical education, kinesiology or related field of study or combination of education and experience provides the required knowledge and abilities.
- Course work must include completion of the Board of Certification (BOC) curriculum requirements. Certification from the National Association Trainers Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) and ability to maintain certification.
- Equivalent to two years of experience as a certified Athletic Trainer in a high school or college environment.
Knowledge: General knowledge of the principles and practices of athletic training including conditioning, injury prevention, injury assessment and rehabilitation; full range of therapeutic modalities and their practical use and physiological basis; other therapeutic preventions and treatments such as taping, bracing, and massage; effective use of rehabilitation and exercise equipment; rules, regulations, and guidelines established by the campuses’ governing national collegiate athletic associations (e.g., National Collegiate Athletics Association or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) pertaining to student athletes, their training, sports medicine care, and health and safety; Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) standards for handling blood borne pathogens; maintaining medical records, including Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards; and following insurance procedures.
Abilities: Ability to effectively assess and evaluate injuries and their severity; develop conditioning and rehabilitation programs and manage and treat injuries; use the full range of appropriate therapeutic modalities and treatments and rehabilitation and exercise equipment to treat and prevent injuries; determine the appropriate referrals for athletes to other health care professionals; recognize life threatening situations and administer the appropriate emergency aid; use a computer to perform medical, insurance and other recordkeeping functions; and work in an environment with competing priorities. Incumbents must possess strong interpersonal and communications skills to develop effective working relationships with athletes and serve as a liaison among athletes, coaching staff, parents, physicians and other health professionals. Demonstrate the leadership, organizational, and administrative skills involved in coordinating an athletic training and sports medicine program.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 1 year of experience working as an athletic certified training student at the collegiate level is preferred.
