Overview

Calspan ASE is the world’s number one supplier of ground-based testing solutions and expertise for the aerospace industry. Our customers get a single, experienced partner to help them efficiently validate engine and airframe performance across development, production and maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO). We are seeking motivated Mechanical Engineer to be responsible for mechanical and structural design, analysis services, and system support of equipment used in test cells, wind tunnels, and other aerospace ground test facilities.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities Listed Below – Compensation and position level commensurate with education and experience.

 

  • Design and Analysis - Develop or reuse system design solution to meet customer requirements.  Partner with designers and project team to deliver complete design package (drawings, BOMs, Etc.).  Design and develop mechanical subsystems, including welded steel structures, pressure vessels, piping systems, simple and complex mechanisms, rotating equipment, and process equipment.  Execute FEA analysis and calculations for substantiation of mechanical subsystems to assure compliance with self-derived and customer requirements.
  • Scope, Schedule, Budget - Perform engineering tasks on schedule and within budget.  Ensure system design aligns with as-sold scope, customer requirements, quality standards, and industry codes.  Communicate regularly with project team on status, issues, and variances to plan. 
  • Document - Document and present work in accordance with quality requirements. Prepare design criteria, calculation packages, procurement specifications, technical reports, validation plans, and product manuals. Participate and lead internal and customer design reviews. 
  • Support - Interface with procurement, production, and installation teams to quickly resolve issues discovered during assembly and test.  Travel to customer and subcontractor sites for design reviews, site surveys, and system commissioning.
  • Quote - Assist marketing in developing proposals for future work.  Develop concepts, cost estimates, proposal write-ups, analyses, options, and recommendations.

Qualifications

Preferred Education / Experience:

  • Bachelors/Masters degree in Mechanical or Aerospace engineering
  • 5 years of related experience
  • Combination of above education and experience 
  • Due to security requirements, must be US Citizen or Green Card Holder

Preferred Knowledge / Ability:

  • Experience with design & analysis of welded steel structures.
  • Experience with design & analysis of fluid packages or process equipment (valves, filters, pumps, instruments, etc. for pneumatic, hydraulic, fuel, and/or cooling water systems).
  • Proficiency with (FEA) Finite Element Analysis. ANSYS experience preferred.
  • Experience with 3D CAD modeling. SolidWorks experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of fabrication methods including forming, welding, machining, and additive manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with GD&T.
  • Familiarity with risk assessments, FMEA and HAZOP analysis.
