General Description

A Medical Assistant (MA) has duties and responsibilities related to patient care in the ambulatory clinic environment. The individual displays responsible behaviors, communicates effectively to others and functions as a member of the healthcare team. The MA functions under the direct supervision and authority of the physician when performing clinical tasks during patient care. The MA reports to the clinic manager, who is responsible for administrative supervision, staff development, and orientation of the MA to the area’s policies and procedures. The MA must demonstrate competency in all skills related to the performance of patient care. The MA maintains an inventory of examination/procedure room supplies, assists in the organization of efficient patient flow, and organizes the clinic environment to assure patient safety. The MA demonstrates problem-solving skills as they relate to patient care activities. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, and administering medications as directed by physician.

Job Duties

· Collects patient information and assessment data. Obtains and records patient’s vital signs: temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, weight and height. Reports assessment findings to practitioner, and records on appropriate documentation forms in a timely manner. Obtains additional data from patient and significant other based on initial data collection. Performs chart review prior to clinic visit to obtain historical data.

· Monitors patient status recognizing and reporting abnormal findings or changes in condition.

· Organizes patient care activities based on assessment findings.

· Confirms and clarifies written orders prior to implementation of delegated tasks.

· Maintains and uses principles of aseptic techniques and infection control when performing clinical duties and tasks.

· Under clinical supervision, performs delegated procedures common to the specialty area in a safe, effective, and efficient manner according to Clinical Practice Policy and Procedures.

· Assists practitioner in identified patient procedures/treatments/examinations, (preparation, positioning, supplies, equipment). Proactively problem-solves and identifies solutions to barriers to safety.

· Appropriately obtains and manages specimens, including: labeling, form completion, transport to laboratories, and log maintenance. Performs quality control for waived testing.

· Recognizes emergency situations and implements emergency procedures according to clinic guidelines. Administers first aid, CPR, and maintains emergency equipment and supplies.

· Provides appropriate patient education, health information materials and community resource lists as directed, and maintains educational supplies. Identifies patient’s need for additional information, and refers to appropriate healthcare resources.

Job Requirements

· Interview patients to obtain medical information and measure their vital signs, weight, and height.

· Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the physician.

· Record patients' medical history, vital statistics and information such as test results in the electronic medical records.

· Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician.

· Collect blood, tissue or other laboratory specimens, log the specimens, and prepare them for testing. Follow through with bagging for laboratory or mailing.

· Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets and physicians' instructions to patients

· Help physicians examine and treat patients, handing them instruments and materials or performing such tasks as giving injections and removing sutures.

· Authorize drug refills and provide prescription information to pharmacies according to clinic protocol.

· Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping the rooms neat and clean.

· Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies.

· Schedule appointments for patients.

· Change dressings on wounds.

· Greet and log in patients arriving at office or clinic.

· Contact medical facilities or departments to schedule patients for tests and/or admission.

· Inventory and order medical, lab, and office supplies and equipment.

· Perform routine laboratory tests and sample analyses. Follow manufacturer’s and laboratory’s guidelines for all waived testing procedures.

· Set up medical laboratory equipment.

· Operate electrocardiogram (EKG), and other equipment to administer routine diagnostic tests.

Qualifications

· Requires: High school diploma or GED, and completion of an accredited Medical Assistant training program, community colleges, and/or vocational schools.

· Three to five years’ experience, or the equivalent, in a community-based primary care practice with duties in leading care coordination.

· Demonstrated skills in leadership, advocacy, communication, education and counseling.

· Culturally effective capabilities demonstrating a sensitivity and responsiveness to varying cultural characteristics and beliefs.

· Bilingual necessary: English/Spanish

· EClinicalWorks EMR experience preferred

· Must be able to take responsibility and work under pressure
