Position:           Biotechnology Teacher

                        Rindge School of Technical Arts/Cambridge Rindge & Latin School

 

Cambridge Rindge & Latin School Community:

Cambridge Rindge & Latin School (CRLS) is a comprehensive high school divided into four Learning Communities designed to promote high levels of learning and achievement for all 2000 students. The Rindge School of Technical Arts (RSTA) is not actually a school, but is the Career & Technical Education (CTE) department within CRLS. Honors courses are offered in many subjects (English, History, Mathematics, and Science) and several RSTA programs, including Biotechnology. More than a dozen Advanced Placement (AP) courses are also available to qualified students.

The Opportunity:

The Rindge School of Technical Arts seeks an experienced, knowledgeable, energetic Biotechnology Teacher, Grades 9-12, to join our caring and innovative community, to work in our amazingly-equipped Biotechnology labs, and to lead a well-established, challenging program in this Biotech-rich city. This is a 10-month, school-year teaching position working with a diverse student population in a comprehensive 9-12 urban school setting. The Biotech Teacher reports to and is supervised by the Executive Director, Rindge School of Technical Arts. The Biotech teacher, in collaboration with colleagues in RSTA and an active & supportive Program Advisory Committee, is responsible for developing, refining, modifying, and implementing courses based upon the Mass. DESE Frameworks for Biotechnology, and teaching all aspects of the Biotechnology industry, including safety, technical skills, related academic subjects, employability, and the underlying principles of science and technology. 

 

S/he will set high expectations for all students and utilize scaffolding and differentiation to support students. The teacher will have an appreciation and awareness for the unique developmental needs of young people in this age band. As a professional, the teacher will display a collegial spirit that supports and enhances continual professional growth consistent with the educational goals and philosophies of our school community. Moreover, s/he will be fully committed to continuously learning, improving, reflecting and working together to ensure that all students achieve at high levels. The new Biotech Teacher will be expected to foster student knowledge of and interest in Biotechnology/Biomanufacturing, utilizing especially the unique opportunities available in Cambridge through our University, commercial, and institutional partners.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with all team members, including but not limited to, a half-time RSTA Biotechnology Teacher, as well as special educators, instructional coaches, paraprofessionals, interventionists, and other support personnel.
  • Assess students regularly and refine and differentiate classroom/lab instruction based on assessment data and student needs.
  • Integrate social learning into the classroom and work to foster a safe, caring, and active learning community.
  • Partner with families and include them in the students’ learning and development as well as encourage families to further the mission of the school.
  • Build on established partnerships with surrounding community individuals, institutions, and organizations for the benefit of our students.
  • Establish a culture of high expectations that includes the shared belief that every student will pursue a dignified and appropriately challenging next step.
  • Teach a three-course program of study which is designed to prepare students in all aspects of Biotechnology.
  • Work independently and with teaching colleagues and the Biotech PAC to develop a curriculum based on current Mass. DESE Frameworks for Biotechnology.
  • Effectively collaborate with program and department colleagues to insure high quality curriculum and instruction for all students.
  • Implement the curriculum to insure that students receive appropriate education and the opportunities to meet the requirements necessary to further their education and to qualify for employment opportunities in the Biotechnology industry.
  • Plan and implement appropriate upgrades to Biotechnology equipment to reflect industry trends/standards.
  • Insure instruction in and compliance with all health and safety regulations.
  • Work with an active Biotechnology Program Advisory Committee (PAC) that meets a minimum of twice annually.
  • Maintain a program of study for Biotechnology that meets all requirements of Chapter 74 regulations.
  • Perform all other essential duties as assigned by the RSTA Executive Director.

Your Skill Set:

As the incoming Biotechnology Teacher you will possess many, though perhaps not all, of the following characteristics and qualifications:

  • Must possess a thorough knowledge of how to teach the competencies and standards of the Mass. DESE Frameworks for Biotechnology.
  • Enthusiasm for Biotechnology/Biomanufacturing in order to recruit and retain students in this program.
  • A minimum of four (4) years’ experience in the Biotechnology industry and/or career and technical education teaching in Biotechnology or related fields.
  • Hold or be eligible for the Massachusetts DESE License as a Mass. CVTE License as a Biotechnology Teacher (required).
  • Bachelor's degree or higher required.
