Responsible for the accurate and timely performance of complex quantitative and/or qualitative laboratory analyses.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for collecting, labeling, processing, and distributing specimens as required. • Perform the necessary calculations, recording, and reporting of test results for inclusion in patient, departmental, and administrative records. • Ensure that all established quality control criteria are met in performance of tests before results are issued and must be able to establish and monitor quality control programs. • Recognize factors which affect procedures and results and resolve existing problems. • Evaluate, modify, and/or design procedures and results; resolve existing problems. • Prepare all reagents. • Actively participate in teaching, staff development, and continuing education programs which include demonstrations and bench training, as well as designing, implementing, and evaluating a teaching/learning experience through formal and informal programs. • Recognize and prevent malfunction of instruments and equipment, performing maintenance as necessary. • Responsible for decision making based on experience and/or education and for giving direction and assistance to other laboratory personnel. • Recognize problems, identify the cause, determine solutions, and take corrective action as appropriate. • Responsible for own work and decisions. • Maintain a clean and safe work area and adequate inventory and supply levels. • Has been evaluated against CLIA-88 requirements and is qualified to perform all duties and responsibilities for this position.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Patient Group Knowledge (Only applies to positions with direct patient contact) The employee must possess/obtain (by the end of the orientation period) and demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide developmentally appropriate assessment, treatment or care as defined by the department’s identified patient ages. Specifically the employee must be able to demonstrate competency in: 1) ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of patient needs; 2) knowledge of growth and development; and 3) understanding of the range of treatment needed by the patients. Competency Statement Must demonstrate competency through an initial orientation and ongoing competency validation to independently perform tasks and additional duties as specified in the job description and the unit/department specific competency checklist. Perform work in accordance with all departmental pay practices and scheduling policies, including but not limited to, overtime, various shift work, and on-call situations. 7. Perform work in alignment with the overall mission and strategic plan of the organization. 8. Follow organizational and departmental policies and procedures, as applicable. 9. Perform related duties as assigned.

Education

• Bachelor's Degree (Required) Education: Bachelor Degree in Medical Technology or biological science Comment: Must meet one (1) of the following requirements: 1. Baccalaureate degree from a college/university with 20 semester hours (30 quarter hours) of biological science (e.g. general biology, microbiology, parasitology, cell biology, physiology, anatomy, zoology, histology, embryology or genetics), 8 semester hours (12 quarter hours) of chemistry and 3 semester hours (4 quarter hours) of mathematics, AND successful completion of a 12 month CAHEA Cytotechnology program, OR 2. Baccalaureate degree from a college/university with 20 semester hours (30 quarter hours) of biological science (e.g. general biology, microbiology, parasitology, cell biology, physiology, anatomy, zoology, histology, embryology or genetics), 8 semester hours (12 quarter hours) of chemistry and 3 semester hours (4 quarter hours) of mathematics, AND 5 years full time acceptable clinical laboratory experience including cytopreparatory techniques, microscopic analysis and evaluation of the body systems within the last 10 years. At least 2 of these years must be subsequent to the completion of the academic component and at least 2 years must be under the supervision of a licensed physician who is a pathologist certified, or eligible for certification, by the American Board of Pathology or has other suitable qualifications acceptable to the Board of Registry. Promotion to or hiring for Cytotechnologist (Registered) requires one (1) of the above education qualifications PLUS registration by examination as a Cytotechnologist by one (1) of the following registries: (1) American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP); or (2) National Certification Agency (NCA). Must possess a thorough, in-depth knowledge of scientific principles and theories and of laboratory equipment and procedures. Must also possess a high degree of mental concentration and emotional stability.
