Camp Hanover runs week long overnight and day camping programs for kids in grades 2-12. We are looking for energetic, kind, and caring young adults to serve as counselors for these programs. A typical camp group is 5-6 boys, 5-6 girls with 1 male and 1 female counselor. Counselors sleep in the cabin with their campers, so staff need to be able to live at Camp Hanover for the summer. PURPOSE: To engage, support, and supervise the campers attending Camp Hanover’s summer camp program, so that each child feels valued and unique.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Be a professing Christian.
- Be of good character, able to exercise sound and sober judgment in a Christian environment.
- 18 Years of age or older as of May 15 of the current year (one year out of high school preferred).
- Experience and comfort working with children.
- Demonstrates the maturity, resourcefulness, stamina, understanding, teamwork, and humor necessary to make the summer program succeed.
- Willing and fully able to participate in an outdoor Christian camp community environment.
- Must be willing and able to live on site in Mechanicsville, Va for the summer!
ACCOUNTABILITY:
The counselor is accountable to the Unit Director as immediate supervisor, and through him or her, the Associate Director of Programs, then the Executive Director, with ultimate accountability to the Camp Hanover Ministries Board through the Personnel Committee.
RELATIONSHIPS:
- Works under the supervision of the Unit Director(s), Associate Director of Programs, and through them the Executive Director.
- The counselor works closely with fellow counselors, support and program staff, and leadership.
- Counselors have primary responsibility for campers in their group.
RESPONSIBILITIES (Including, but not limited to, the following):
- Be a positive example to campers and staff members by promoting and safeguarding the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of all members of the Camp Hanover community.
- Ensure that the program previously approved by Camp Hanover Ministries Board (CHMB) is carried out in all groups.
- Ensure that all policies laid out by the Camp Hanover Ministries Board are carried out.
- Attend and actively participate in pre-camp staff orientation.
- Provide oversight of all campers assigned to your care, providing for the spiritual, physical, and emotional well-being of all children.
- Lead daily Bible studies with campers.
- Facilitate group covenants to provide for living agreements for each camper group.
- Provide opportunities for campers to live in. live with, learn about, and care for God’s creation.
- Provide opportunities for campers to develop skills in outdoor living.
- Facilitate the scheduling of all activities during the town meeting.
- Conduct evening check-in with camper groups.
- Assure campers are supervised at all times.
- Attend all staff meetings, all meals, and all all-camp events when on duty.
