Job Title: Controls Engineer

Location: Arnold AFB, TN

Canvas, Inc. is currently seeking a Controls Engineer to join our Digital Engineering team for advanced control systems at Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC) in Tullahoma, TN. You will be working closely with IPT Leads, Chief Engineers, and team members to develop objectives, opportunities, strategies, and plans to implement control solutions for arc-heated test facilities. The arc heaters at AEDC provide aerothermal ground test simulations of hypersonic flight in support of system development by the Department of Defense (DoD) and the commercial aerospace industry. We seek team members that are driven and engaged in their work while simultaneously demonstrating high character, given that you will often be working on sensitive and unique problems which require a high degree of trust from our customers.


Responsibilities

The Controls Engineer will be responsible for the development, implementation, optimization, and testing of control algorithms and system dynamic models for the Digital Engineering team for advanced control systems. You will assist in identifying and implementing innovative technologies to expedite the development of solutions and improve system engineering. The candidate will work within an established and very skilled team of engineers and scientists, contributing to various projects which often require analyzing, understanding, and modeling complex, real-world phenomena to support design and decision making.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Research, design, and implement successful control strategies for facility assets
  • Use modeling and simulation tools to develop and test control systems
  • Identification and specification of related platform components
  • Develop, mature and use control engineering methodologies
  • Write, test, and document simulated control law models according to development standards

Additional responsibilities the Controls Engineer will be required to execute:

  • Resolve technical issues that may affect development schedule or overall performance of the system
  • Develop control algorithm(s) and rapid development experiments
  • Conduct and participate in technical exchange meetings and working groups
  • Develop and present technical and status briefings to Senior Leadership
  • Establish a supporting infrastructure and environment that uses models to inform decisions points and support collaboration and communication across all stakeholders

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • 2 years of relevant experience that includes control system development with fundamental understanding of system dynamics and control theory
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering, or related field
  • Strong knowledge in MATLAB/Simulink
  • Familiarity with common industry instrumentation (pressure transducers, thermocouples, strain gauges, flow meters, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of classical control theory - time/frequency domains, stability analysis, PID control, etc.
  • Ability to work independently or with a team, demonstrate strong initiative, and organize all tasking with minimal supervision
  • Written and oral communication skills, including the ability to express technical ideas
  • US Citizen

Preferred Education/Experience:

  • 5 years of relevant experience that includes control system development with demonstrated deep understanding of system dynamics, classical and modern control theory/design/analysis
  • PhD or Master's degree in Electrical, Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • Proficiency in using MATLAB/Simulink for dynamics/controls modeling and simulation
  • Demonstrated knowledge of advanced control theories including: optimal control, adaptive control, nonlinear control, robust control, system identification and state-space modeling
  • Advanced understanding of system stability and sensitivity analysis techniques such as: Nyquist/Bode plots, Lyapunov functions, limit cycles, and describing functions
  • Experience designing, implementing, and testing software for real-time systems in LabVIEW, such as Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL)

Required Security Level: Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance
