Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA), the Regions number one mobility provider, is looking to fill the Senior Planner (Capital Planning and Design) position. Working at CDTA, you will be a part of a team that provides essential services to the Capital Region.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Planner oversees capital planning and design projects. Their primary role is to influence the infrastructure of the Capital Region’s transportation network to support transit operations and encourage its use. The Senior Planner will work closely with other external planners, engineers, and architects, and with peers within CDTA.
- Manage regional conceptual design/feasibility studies for the expansion of Bus Rapid Transit, implementation of busways / bus lanes, mobility hubs / transit centers, park & ride expansions, and other capital initiatives.
- Develop preliminary design/engineering for transit infrastructure projects constructed by CDTA which improve transit operations, safety, pedestrian access, and comfort at bus stops.
- Develop strong relationships with CDTA's Transportation, Safety, and Facilities Departments to determine where new infrastructure can improve transit operations and ensure their input on design of all projects.
- Support deployment of new mobility services (ex. bikeshare and carshare) with the design of associated infrastructure.
- Manage engineering firms to progress projects through detailed design phase.
- Manage capital design line items for relevant work in annual budget.
- Transition projects to Facilities Department and assisting during final design and construction.
- Participate with teams working to obtain funding for capital projects from federal, state, local, and private sources.
- Review designs for roadway projects by municipal and state partners and advocate for the inclusion of transit-supportive infrastructure.
- Assist with creating and distributing internal and external materials that market and communicate capital projects.
- Speaking for CDTA, present projects to neighborhood associations, advocacy organizations, and regional committees. Represent CDTA at public meetings/events held by partners.
- Participate in long-term capital planning by regional MPOs, municipalities & counties, colleges/universities, NYS Department of Transportation, NYS Office of General Services, and other state/regional/local entities.
- Represent CDTA on transit, bicycle, pedestrian, Complete Streets, and related committees in the region.
- Monitor operations and document improvements (e.g. increased ridership, reduced accidents) after projects are completed.
- Participate in service planning initiatives as they relate to infrastructure improvements.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Master’s degree in urban & regional planning, engineering, architecture, public administration, or other related discipline.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience at transportation-related agency or company such as a transit authority, local/state/federal transportation department, MPO, transportation consulting firm, or transportation advocacy organization.
- Experience using graphic/concept design software, such as Adobe Illustrator and InDesign.
- Experience in public speaking and stakeholder relations.
- Personal experience using public transportation on a regular basis is preferred.
- This position does not require manual labor (heavy lifting) or significant travel. Work in the field is required to correct and/or validate service data. This position may require 24/7 technical support and remote access for “off-site” administrative support.

Grade 616 $63,458-78,053/salary
