Purpose of the Job/Essential Functions:

Austin PBS is seeking an innovative and experienced journalism leader to reshape news and public affairs for Central Texas and further our mission to become a hub for content development and distribution focused on local storytelling from diverse voices and reflective of the communities we serve. A priority of this position will be to launch a weekly program later this year. Other priorities include leading the station’s community journalism efforts and creating opportunities for solutions-based community discussions. The ideal candidate is someone with a solid grasp of local issues, a passion for managing exceptional talent, and the ability to meet audiences on different platforms.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Creates, implements and refines the editorial vision, mission, strategic plan, priorities and policies for all news and public affairs programs at Austin PBS
  • Develop news products to reach current and prospective audiences
  • Manages news and public affairs content production to ensure it is consistent with the vision, mission, goals and editorial policies of the department and station
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures to maintain consistency, quality and ethical  journalistic standards in all content operations
  • Ensures all news and public affairs programs meet high standards of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility
  • Directly supervises reporting and content staff
  • Responsible for recruiting, training and coaching of news and public affairs staff
  • Directs and manages all short, medium and long term planning around current and future news and public affairs projects 
  • Collaborates with other departments to achieve the strategic priorities of the station, which includes but is not limited to fundraising, audience and programming goals
  • Collaborates with other departments to plan and execute news and public affairs outreach events 
  • Establishes, fosters and maintains relationships and collaborations with other media organizations who share our priorities
  • Communicate with the station’s board of directors, community advisory board and other stakeholder groups regarding news and public affairs content as needed
  • Makes public appearances on behalf of the station
  • Mentors aspiring journalists and storytellers by attending workshops, conferences and other professional development opportunities 
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

Knowledge & Skills Required 

  • Minimum of 7 to seven years plus minimum 2 years as a manager.
  • Bachelor's degree in video, photography, journalism, or other similar related fields (or the equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Strong leadership skills and a history of management 
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain high journalistic standards and uncompromising ethics
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a diverse team toward a common goal
  • Understanding and commitment to community engagement through an audience-centered approach to coverage
  • Must have proven outstanding leadership, communication, analytical and organizational skills.
  • Must have a creative mindset, enthusiasm for online media, and an understanding of business
  • Must have proven abilities in planning and coordinating people and operations.
  • Must have excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Must have attention to detail

This is a full-time salaried position that is currently hybrid at an annual salary of $100,000.  This position reports to the Chief Content Officer.
