Technical Writer

DEPARTMENT: Product Management

REPORTS TO: Sr. Director, Product Management

GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: The ideal candidate will be a versatile communicator with the ability to create, edit and maintain a variety of instructional materials, including technical documentation and service/manufacturing work instructions.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create, develop, and maintain technical work instructions in Microsoft Word for the service, repair and manufacturing of equipment.
  • Create, develop and maintain reference documentation in Microsoft Word (e.g. user manuals, technical references, installation guides, applications guides, technical specifications, etc.) for use by customers or internal staff.
  • Utilize Adobe Illustrator (or similar tools) to create accurate sketches and illustrations of products and installation/repair methods.
  • Translate technical and/or complicated information into clear, concise documents appropriate for various target audiences.
  • Interview subject matter experts and technical staff to collect information required to produce documentation.
  • Research information such as drawings, design reports, equipment, and test specifications to fill any gaps.
  • Work closely with engineering, manufacturing, customer service and support teams to ensure quality and accuracy of content.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Must possess the ability to operate independently in developing visual aids that complement written instructions.
  • Must demonstrate strong organizational and revision control ability.
  • Must possess excellent writing and editing skills in Microsoft word.
  • Must demonstrate a technical understanding of mechanical and electrical systems and components.
  • Must be able to efficiently organize and manage documentation projects.
  • Must work well under stress and time pressures.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office products, particularly Word, Excel, Visio and PowerPoint.
  • Proficient in various multimedia applications and course authoring tools is a plus. Examples include:
    • Adobe Photoshop
    • Abode Acrobat Pro
    • Adobe Illustrator
  • Video production and editing is a plus. Examples include:
    • TechSmith Camtasia
    • Adobe Premier

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field or equivalent work experience.
  • Proven experience as a technical writer for technical documentation, including service or manufacturing work instructions.
  • Additional consideration will be given to those with three or more years of development test or field service experience in an electrical or gas turbine environment.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Usual office and occasional factory working conditions.
  • Required to sit for long periods of time. Extensive use of a computer.
