The Safe Patient Handling and Mobility (SPHM) position develops, coordinates, facilitates, and manages program that directs and maintains safe patient handling and mobility services related to clinical practice, operations, research and education. This is to include strategy, design, planning, development, and implementation of SPHM initiatives. Responsible for leading and facilitating significant SPHM change initiatives intended to improve clinical quality, patient safety and/or patient experience in an efficient, effective and timely manner. This position will be responsible for creating a culture of patient and employee safety within Carilion and creating systems to track and provide coordination between departments, fostering inter-organizational engagement and representing the organization’s safety initiatives to both internal and external stakeholders. .
Coordinates and participates in staff training and competency assessments for lifting equipment, supplies, and techniques. Development of safe patient handling algorithms.- Conduct patient care ergonomic evaluations to develop recommendations for patient handling technology based on the needs of each clinical unit/area
- In conjunction with the workers’ comp/employee health office, reviews employee injury reports related to patient handling, and provides additional coaching and/or training, as needed. Collecting and compiling data on employee lifting injuries by completing “Deep Dives” with unit managers and identifying opportunities for improvement
- Tracks advances in patient lifting technology and makes recommendations for additional or replacement equipment. Coordinates Equipment Trials.
- Regular rounding and availability to patient care areas to provide coaching and continually foster a “safe patient handling and mobility” patient environment.
- Works with the Safe Patient Handling Work Group, the Environment of Care (EOC) committee, and marketing department to develop and distribute publicity materials for SPH initiative, including printed materials, articles, and press releases as applicable.
- The SPHM Program Manager will lead the SPHM Working Group, be the on-going point of contact for outside consultants and participate on designated review committees’ r/t worker injury and others, as assigned. May be required to present information to various groups, including but not limited to, senior leadership, patient care unit staff, and ambulatory clinic staff. Works collaboratively with various stakeholders such as the Department of Nursing, Safety Office, Rehabilitative Services, Patient Transport, Security Services and other related departments.
- Is available to attend various unit-based meetings to address SPH issues.
- In conjunction with the safety office, maintains data related to safe patient handling implementation and injuries, including injury expense reduction. Maintains quarterly dashboard.
- Reviews and updates the EOC “Safe Patient Handling” policy semi-annually, and updates as needed. Serves as the policy “owner”.\
- Coordinates all interdisciplinary communication efforts regarding safe patient handling and patient mobility efforts, this includes EHR and paper forms and patient handouts.
- Work in conjunction with HR to Develop and implement Pre-employment functional assessment program for system. This will include reviewing essential job functions, etc.
- Will work with system leaders to lead, develop and implement SPHM programs in all Carilion Clinic Hospitals.
- Will manage the mobility aide program as part of the SPHM initiative.
Minimum Qualifications
The leader of the Early Mobility/Safe Patient Handling will be providing education to nursing staff, work with nursing to identify right lifts, drive new processes and be a key player. Education: BSN Required. MSN preferred.
Experience: 3-5 years’ experience in health care required. Prior bedside (direct care) clinical experience in a hospital setting preferred.
Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Registered Nurse in State of VA required.
Other Minimum Qualifications: Excellent public speaking, presentation and communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with all levels of management and staff.
