Position Summary
The primary role of this position is to assist in all aspects of service delivery in the Community Kitchen and Food Pantry. The Food Services Specialist’s time will be split, approximately 50/50, between the Community Kitchen and Food Pantry. This position takes the lead when the Chef or Food Pantry Specialist are out and assists on daily operations.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities (inclusive but not exhaustive):
Guest Relations and Client Services
Kitchen
- Assist and take direction from the Chef in the production of designated menu items including, but not limited to, entrees, vegetables, salads, etc.
- Engage in safety standards and practices.
- Develop and maintain appropriate working relationships with food services volunteers.
- Perform Chef’s duties, in Chef’s absence.
Pantry
- Distribute food from the Pantry within established agency and organization guidelines.
- Provide strong customer service to clients and colleagues.
Inventory and Maintenance
Kitchen
- Assist in picking up donated/purchased goods from various locations (Central Texas Food Bank, Restaurant Supply stores, etc.).
- Proper use of basic food preparation equipment:
- Steam jacketed kettle
- Convection Ovens
- Deli Slicer
- Commercial Dishwasher
- Clean job related or assigned areas, equipment and utensils per health department and established guidelines.
- Assist with inspecting and storing food and supplies in Kitchen.
- Order, receive, organize and maintain usable food stock in the Pantry in accordance with Caritas guidelines
- Maintain general cleanliness of the Pantry area.
- Transfer needed food items from offsite storage to pantry.
- Assist Pantry Specialist in maintaining inventory of food in all storage areas.
Organizational Support Functions
- Attends all Caritas staff meetings.
- Attends all Program department meetings.
- Complies with administrative procedures, reporting, and record keeping functions as assigned.
Other Duties
- Treats clients, staff, volunteers and the general public with courtesy and respect.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Develops an approved plan for professional development
Qualifications
EDUCATION
- Minimum of high school diploma or equivalent
- Culinary degree or certification strongly preferred
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Ability to work in high stress environment
- Minimum one year experience in food handling and preparation, three or more years strongly preferred
- Preparing meals in large quantities (e.g. buffet, catering, banqueting, etc.)
- Experience working with diverse populations
COMPUTER SKILLS
- Basic email and computers skills required (Word, Excel, Teams, SharePoint, Outlook, etc)
LANGUAGE SKILLS
- Bilingual (English/Spanish preferred)
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid food manager’s certificate within 30 days of hire
- Must have valid driver’s license
Salary/Benefits:
- Base Salary Range: $38,975-$48,400
