BACKGROUND

Carmen Schools of Science & Technology (Carmen) is a small but growing charter school network with a mission to graduate all students as critical thinkers and self-directed learners prepared for success in college, meaningful careers, community involvement, and family life.  

Carmen Schools currently operates five campuses, each one is as an independent charter school authorized by Milwaukee Public Schools or UW-Milwaukee:

  • Carmen High School of Science and Technology, South (opened in 2007, now serving 391 students in grades 9-12)
  • Carmen Middle/High School of Science and Technology, Northwest (opened in 2013, now serving 654 students in grades 6-12 and expanding to 800 students by 2020)
  • Carmen High School of Science and Technology, Southeast (opened in 2016, now serving 541 students in grades 9-11 and growing to 800 students in grades 9-12 by 2022)
  • Carmen Middle School of Science and Technology, South (opened in 2018, now serving 70 students in grade 6 and growing to 320 students in grades 6-8 by 2020)
  • NEW in 2019-2020, Carmen has acquired Stellar Elementary into our network of schools, currently offering K4-4th grade, and will be expanding to K4-5th in 2020-2021.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Information Technology/Database Technician (“IT Tech”) is part of the team working with Carmen’s information technology and data systems.  This position specializes in data systems, but provides support across all functional areas within IT. 

Information technology plays a critical role in ensuring the academic success of Carmen’s students.  The IT team is responsible for purchasing, deploying, and maintaining hardware and equipment across the network and for maintaining Carmen’s student information and related data systems.  The team works collaboratively to manage this diverse array of functions.  Working under the direction of the IT Manager, the IT Techs play an important role in managing assigned responsibilities within this scope of work.  While IT Techs provide support across all IT responsibilities, individual IT Techs specialize in either hardware of software/student information. Within their area of specialty, the IT Tech is expected to maintain a higher level of responsibility and skills. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  1.  Associates Degree or related certifications, ideally in an IT-related field.
  2. Two or more years of experience working in IT or data management. PowerSchool or other student information system experience is preferred.  Ideally, experience working in the deployment and management of hardware and software in a school setting.
  3. High level of attention to detail; ability to produce highly accurate reports, documents, and other outputs.
  4. Comfort and familiarity with working with data management; demonstrated ability to quickly learn and master new systems.
  5. Ability to meet deadlines and work as a team to complete tasks.
  6. Understanding of IT principles and an ability to communicate technical concepts effectively.
  7. Strong sense of discretion and confidentiality required.
  8. Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  9. Strong organizational skills and ability to effectively prioritized and manage an array of different tasks.
  10. Experience and knowledge of a range of hardware and software.
  11. Positive attitude, sense of humor, and ability to work well with other team members.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain the school student information system and data reporting
    • Ensure integrity and accuracy of student data
    • Prepare student schedules, rosters, report cards, and other reports for school use
    • Prepare compliance reports
    • Prepare and facilitate upload of student data across different software applications
    • Assist with the development of policies, procedures, and trainings to ensure consistency in the maintenance and usage of data across the network
  • As a part of the IT team, monitor the helpdesk and respond to issues within a timely manner
    • Work collaboratively with the IT team to allocate tasks
    • Respond to assigned requests for help within established standards for response time
    • Follow through on problem resolution with users
    • Adhere to established standards in resolving problems
    • Create documentation to assist with future problem resolution
  • Assist with installation, configuration, inventory maintenance and ongoing usability of system hardware and software
    • Verify functionality of hardware and software components
    • Troubleshoot hardware and software issues
    • Assist teachers and staff with laptops problems and answer their questions
    • Install, maintain and troubleshooting software on laptops and chromebooks
    • Performing repairs on chromebooks, laptops and other technical equipment
  • Set up and ensuring readiness of student devices for state testing
  • Assist in setting up Google student access
  • Troubleshoot and repair chromebooks and laptops including broken screens, keyboard replacement, and other misc repairs
  • Opportunity to assist with network and server related projects

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The position will work predominantly Monday – Friday; however, this position will require occasional work on evenings and weekends and during other off-hours.
