Carnegie Mellon University’s department of Engineering and Public Policy is searching for a Postdoctoral Research Associate. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who thrives in an exciting work environment. You will add to the department by providing support in a new 1.5-year funded project to perform an intercomparison of power system capacity expansion models.

In this role, you will be working with collaborators to conduct a detailed intercomparison between several distinct, innovative power system planning models with the goal of analyzing critical questions relating to electric infrastructure planning. The postdoctoral research associate will assist with developing a framework that uses the Tools for Energy Model Optimization and Analysis (Temoa) model with a set of consistent data inputs in the intercomparison effort. Project results may include but are not limited to conference presentations, publication of peer-reviewed articles, public data and code repositories, and curricular materials to be used in training potential users of the model.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Coordinate research activities among a large, interdisciplinary academic team and have primary responsibility for data and model implementation
  • Conducting the model-based analysis
  • Other duties as assigned

You should demonstrate:

  • Ability to think broadly about climate mitigation pathways, and climate policy
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving reasoning skills

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in engineering, operations research, or a related field is required
  • Domain knowledge in energy with expertise in energy systems optimization modeling and strong programming skills
  • Specific experience with GitHub, Python, Pyomo and relational databases is a plus
