Water ARC Laboratory Research Manager

Carollo Engineers is an internationally recognized engineering firm specializing in planning, design, and construction of water, wastewater, and reuse facilities and the associated infrastructure. Our investment in applied research and Carollo’s Water Applied Research Center (Water ARC®) provides nationwide process-based research expertise in support of our efforts for municipal and private sector clients across the nation.  Water ARC® services include laboratory-based bench-scale treatability testing, pilot-scale equipment design and fabrication, and full-service support for field, pilot, and demonstration studies.

We are seeking a Laboratory Research Manager for our Water ARC® treatability testing center.  This position combines the responsibilities of a traditional Laboratory Manager with the explicit charge to think innovatively about conventional and alternative treatment processes and the analysis of large quantities of data generated through bench-, pilot-, and full-scale testing. It is expected that this Laboratory Research Manager will selectively pursue external funding to pursue new ideas. This role also explicitly involves a leadership component that includes mentorship of laboratory staff to think critically and to present and develop new ideas.  In this role, the Laboratory Research Manager will have the potential to develop a publication resume equivalent to that of an academic setting without being as dependent on external funding.  

Responsibilities

• Oversight and optimization of all laboratory operations, organization, resource allocation, project planning, inventory, and equipment maintenance.
• Mentoring and training laboratory team personnel; team building.
• Collaborating with project teams across the company; serving as a liaison between Water ARC® and other Technical Practices (water, wastewater, reuse, industrial water, and the Carollo Research Group).
• Preparation/review of treatability testing plans, budgets, and billing.
• Pursuit of external funding for the development of new ideas.
• Statistical analysis and the critical evaluation of data sets; preparation/review of resulting data packages and other project deliverables.
• Provision of technical expertise to both the project teams and Water ARC® laboratory staff.
• Synthesis of applied research results into peer-reviewed publications and a company-wide process technology inventory.
• Quality management and laboratory safety.

Qualifications

• Strong skills in the areas of communication, team building, collaboration, training, and mentoring.
• 5 years’ experience managing a water-focused laboratory, including laboratory testing, field testing, data management and analysis, technical reporting, project management, and client service.
• Robust skills in data management/analysis/interpretation, statistics, quality management, and laboratory safety.
• Ability to apply engineering principles including critical thinking, problem solving, optimization, and innovation.
• Foundational understanding of analytical techniques and instruments.
• Master’s or doctoral degree in Environmental Engineering or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

• 5-10 years of water-focused applied research experience.
