Summary
Under the direction of the nurse manager and supervision of the professional nurse, provides supportive care to the Emergency Department through clerical and patient care duties. Is responsible for performing specialized technical tasks, as defined on page 3 of this job description, according to established protocols and reporting unusual incidence and findings. Population served by this position is all age groups
Responsibilities
1. Maintains professional competence through formal education, workshops and unit specific education. Maintains current education file. Attends 50% or greater staff meetings, review and initials those meeting minutes not attended. Completes unit mandatary education. 2. Competently performs patient care under the direction of a registered nurse, identifies deviations from norm, and reports findings in a timely and appropriate manner. 3. Demonstrates ability to work effectively as a multi disciplinary team member, supports and assists members in all activities. 4. Assists and performs special tasks as requested by medical or nursing staff, including observation and isolation patient care, following established protocols. Prepares patients for examinations and procedures. 5. Assists unit clerk with computer order entry and answering of phones. Demonstrates appropriate telephone etiquette at all times and relays messages in a timely and appropriate manner. Is able to prioritize and maintain flow during busy times. Assists in obtaining, notifying nursing staff, highlighting returned labs on physician order sheet and files lab reports. Monitors urine collection and enteres orders. 6. Works effectively as a team member in the delivery of care and assists in the orientation of new employees. Maintains good working relationships among all nursing unit personnel and other hospital team members through appropriate communication. 7. Maintains an orderly and clean environment for patients and co-workers, transports and uses equipment appropriately. 8. Maintains patient comfort and privacy at all times. Performs duties in a competent and caring manner. 9. Notifies appropriate licensed personnel when patient complains of pain. 10. Serves on committees, attends meetings and educational seminars to enhance and maintain awareness in techniques and procedures. 11. Able to act independently and make decisions under stress as necessary 12. Able to perform the duties on the following procedures/skills list. EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT TECHNICIAN SKILLS AND PROCEDURES LIST 1. Ambulation of patients, as necessary, to other department floors by wheel chair or gurney. 2. Assessment of patients/data collection, including vital signs - blood pressure, pulse, respirations, temperature (oral, axillary, rectal), pulse ox, CMS, height, weight, intake and output. 3. Assist with bedpan, commode, and/or urinal use. 4. Maintain and prepare rooms between patients and procedures. 5. Answer call lights. 6. Perform 12-lead EKG (no interpretation). 7. Basic CPR during Code Blue. 8. Position and transport patients to rooms and testing areas via gurney and/or wheelchair. 9. Initiate and maintain isolation technique. 10. Measure and apply elastic stockings. 11. Apply and monitor orthopedic appliances, including knee immobilizer, cervical collar, sling, crutches, air splint. 12. Assist with post mortem care. 13. Apply, release, and monitor restraint use. 14. Seizure care/precautions. 15. Phletbotomy: performs phlebotmomies with minimum discomfort and accurate instruction to patient, collects the appropriate specimen and amount for ordered tests, correctly labels specimen, and accurately collects STATS or Timed tests. 16. Specimen collection/handling, including respiratory secretions, throat culture, stool, and urine samples. 17. Appropriate care and documentation of patient belongings. 18. Collect data related to health status by collecting, reporting, and recording basic objective and subjective data at the direction and under the supervision of RN. 19. Deliver food trays/assist patient with eating. 20. Provide control of bleeding with use of dressings, pressure, and elevation of body part. 21. Apply orthopedic splint to injured extremity. 22. Apply and maintain c-spine immobilization/precautions. 23. Eye flushing with normal saline without use of Morgan lens. 24. Provide supplemental oxygen by applying approved devices (nasal cannula, simple oxygen mask, nonrebreather mask, etc.) 25. Set up and assist physician with suturing. Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The specifications listed below are representative of the education and experience as well as knowledge, skill and ability required. • Completion of an organized nursing assistant program with minimum of one year acute care experience or One year required previous experience as Emergency Department Tech, two years preferred. • Current BLS certification required. • Current State of Nevada Laboratory Assistant license and/ or current Nevada Paramedic license. • Comfortable working with computers and software
