CAS is currently seeking a Content Acquisition Scientist on our Content Operations team. This position will be located in our headquarters in Columbus, Ohio.
Position Summary:
The Content Acquisition Scientist cultivates relationships with publishers, patent offices, and suppliers to ensure timely and cost-effective procurement of source material to help build world-class databases of chemical, biological and related scientific data. They monitor, review, analyze changes and impacts, and identify new sources of literature from around the world in various languages for inclusion in CAS Solutions.
Job Accountabilities:
- Acquires content for CAS databases, products, and services. Applies knowledge to identify new sources of scientific material, including but not limited to patents, journals and other serial publications, technical reports, conference proceedings, dissertations, and books. Activities of the Content Acquisition Scientist include but limited to:
- Applies knowledge to acquire receipt of newly identified content in best format available and in accordance with CAS guidelines.
- Reliably assists acquisition (publisher/patent office/supplier) accounts and ensures CAS has rights to use content in database building or in accordance with terms defined in license agreement. Learns the proper handling of proprietary data.
- Participates in technical discussions with acquisition accounts and CAS Technology when adapting to format changes or acquiring electronic content from a new account.
- Applies and reinforces deeper knowledge for technical, policy and procedural matters, and other CAS knowledge related to acquisition processing for database building.
- Applies growing understanding and strategy to keep abreast of changes to standards and technology by networking with acquisition accounts, subscribing to discussion lists.
- Effectively communicate with internal and external customers, partners and suppliers utilizing best practices. Keeps correspondence organized and in a central location.
- Develops a basic knowledge of the department to suggest ideas to negotiate lower prices and provide analysis of document landscapes.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in business, library science, information studies or a related field and 2 or more years of work experience. Alternatively, relevant advanced degrees can substitute for years of experience.
- Demonstrates proficiency as a subject matter expertise in science publishing industry or patent offices.
- Ability to utilize available resources (documentation, experts, reference material, training material, trainer) to work more independently and to provide accurate information in areas of specialty. Solutions focused with an aim towards continuous improvement and growth.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Strong skills in problem solving, critical thinking, and ability to make quick and accurate decisions within the scope of knowledge and experience. Anticipates potential problems and proactively escalates to mitigate them.
- Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize responsibilities. Competence in managing competing priorities, handling communications, participating in meetings, maintaining focus on complex tasks, and supporting the customer experience.
- Ability to recognize and report/direct significant accuracy, workflow, process, and system issues to the correct process, system, or responsible party or resolve with support.
- Successfully and proficiently leverages workplace standard business technology applications, able to learn and training others to use custom software to complete work assignments.
- Enhanced ability to proactively collaborate, communicate, and share knowledge with peers with diverse backgrounds.
