What are the responsibilities and job description for the Professional Castellow Adult Learning Center Instructor position at Casper College?
The Professional Castellow Adult Learning Center (CALC) Instructor conducts Adult Basic Education (ABE) and High School Equivalency (HSE) classes and advises and recruits students.The CALC offers assessment and instruction in reading, writing, science, social studies, and math for students pursuing a high school equivalency certificate. ABE, Citizenship and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are also offered.
Note: This is a grant-funded, full-time, 10-month position. Summer and evening hours are required.
CALC instructors teach classes for Adult Learning Center students using appropriate teaching methods; prepare teaching materials and syllabi; access and evaluate student progress; schedule standardized tests and report scores; maintain accurate and adequate records; establish regular office hours; conduct new student orientation; attend training and meetings; obtain and retain certifications; and conduct outreach.
CALC instructors perform other related duties as assigned, including, but not limited to, conducting distance education and online teaching; advising students; serving on committees; participating in CALC meetings; providing program budget recommendations; participating in the development of program curricula; staying in constant communication with students; and adhering to all institutional, federal, and state policies and guidelines. CALC instructors remain current with the adult education field by reading literature, communicating with colleagues, and participating in professional development.
- Assists in the identification and recruitment of prospective students
- Assesses students’ academic entry levels, academic progress, learning styles, and disabilities for educational planning purposes
- Instructs in the areas of basic reading, basic math, basic writing, high school equivalency, and English as a Second Language
- Maintains accurate records of student registration, attendance, and assessment levels and scores
- Refers students to community agencies when appropriate
- Assists in developing, coordinating, and implementing CALC activities
- Assists in organizing, implementing, and presenting professional development for program staff and volunteers
- Participates in regular meetings, training, and professional development
- Serves as a resource to staff, students, and program volunteers
- Assists in the development of program objectives and strategies
- Assists in writing, prioritizing, and implementing program goals
- Assists in writing grants and proposals
- Assists in the dissemination of program information to appropriate local, state, and federal agencies including the writing of annual reports
- Serves on committees as required
- All other duties as assigned
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Mastery of oral and written English language
- Teaching experience or a background in education, rehabilitation, psychology, or social work required
- Strong organizational skills
- Strong technology skills
- Strong background in basic math, English, and reading
- Sensitivity and compassion working with disadvantaged students
- Ability to work within a collaborative setting
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to pass fingerprint and background check
- Valid Wyoming driver’s license
- Master’s degree
- Adult education teaching experience
- Distance education and online teaching experience
The typical work environment is a classroom and office setting requiring normal safety precautions. Work is usually performed during the normal workweek including regular daytime and evening hours and occasional early mornings and weekends. This position frequently works with the public and students. Short periods of time will be spent outdoors traveling between campus buildings in various weather conditions. Outreach sites may require additional travel. Noise levels are usually minimal.
Employee must be able to stand for long periods, speak, hear, use hands and fingers to handle materials and use computer, feel and reach with hands and arms. Occasional lifting of up to 10 pounds may be required; less frequent lifting/moving of 20 lbs (paper boxes, office supplies, classroom materials, etc.). Visual requirements require close-up, distance, and ability to adjust focus.
