What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director – Protein Science position at Catalent?
Position Title: Director– Protein Science
Location: Emeryville, CA
Catalent Biologics Emeryville, CA site, formerly the startup company Redwood Bioscience, has developed a proprietary approach for site-specific bioconjugation to produce next-generation antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs). This technology, termed SMARTag®, is based on use of the aldehyde-tag site-specific protein modification technology and Catalent’s novel conjugation chemistry and proprietary, stable linkers. SMARTag® is a clinical-stage technology, with its first ADC—TRPH-222—beginning Phase 1 clinical trials in 2019. The Catalent Biologics Emeryville site comprises a close-knit team of scientists working cross-functionally with each other to nimbly achieve our goals and milestones. We are a research site, working to develop therapeutic ADC drug candidates for clinical testing. We also continuously strive to improve and expand our technology platform. The team has a focus on publishing results and contributing to the exciting and dynamic field of bioconjugation and drug conjugates.
The Director of Protein Science will lead the Protein Science team, which uses both transient transfection and stable cell line generation approaches for protein production that supports the development of therapeutic antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) candidates and other biologic molecules. The Director will be responsible for supporting therapeutic antibody discovery programs, leading aldehyde tag-based protein engineering campaigns, overseeing protein purification and characterization work, and leading cell line development programs.
The Role
Overseeing protein production databases and ensuring data integrity of gene, plasmid, and protein sequences.
Communicating among site Teams and partners to plan and execute on protein production needs. This includes scheduling production processes within Protein Science Team and communicating/managing deliverable needs with other site Teams.
Leading team to conduct medium and/or high throughput antibody gene cloning and milligram to gram scale antibody production/purification using transient or stable transfection.
Serving as a key leader in a multidisciplinary team performing therapeutic antibody discovery.
Identifying and enabling novel therapeutic applications for aldehyde tag technology.
Interfacing with internal and external stakeholders as a leader representing our site and SMARTag business. This includes presenting data both at professional conferences and in private meeting settings.
The Candidate
Bachelors Degree with 15 years of relevant post-graduate experience; Masters with 12 years of relevant post-graduate experience; PhD with 10 years of relevant post-graduate experience
Degree must be in molecular biology, structural biology, biochemistry, or a related discipline.
5 years of proven success leading a team and providing performance management assessment and feedback strongly desired.
5 years of experience managing projects strongly desired.
Experience in people and project leadership, managing multiple deliverables and timelines. Ownership of the process, coupled with an ability to prioritize, delegate, troubleshoot, and communicate effectively is required.
Candidates must have extensive experience in DNA cloning/molecular biology, including isothermal assembly (Gibson) cloning techniques.
Extensive antibody expression (with an emphasis on expression in mammalian cells) and purification experience is required.
A track record of establishing and meeting production goals that consistently meet quality requirements is essential.
Experience in antibody characterization and protein engineering, including knowledge of alternative formats such as scFv, Fab, Fab(2), and Fc-fusions, will be favorably considered.
Experience with non-antibody protein formats, including multi-chain complexes, will be favorably considered.
Cell line development experience, including stable cell line generation will be favorably considered.
