Job Summary: Under the direct supervision of the Managing Attorney; supervises volunteer staffdevelops, schedules and implements necessary group application workshops, serves as the program’s media contact; provides outreach to the community on immigration services available to the local Afghan community; guides cases through all required phases of immigration procedures; prepares cases for USCIS appointments and other immigration related appointments; maintains detailed and complete legal records required by the program; provides or obtains accurate translations of documents; performs any other duties deemed necessary and/or as assigned by the supervisor.

 

Essential Duties:

  1. Recruits, interviews, trains and supervises volunteers involved in immigration workshops, seminars, and completion of re-parole applications, asylum applications, and other types immigration relief that individuals may be eligible for.   Facilitates weekly or other scheduled programs.
  2. Fulfills responsibility for the development and coordination of the Immigration Program for service to low-income Afghan population by: conducting Citizenship workshops and outreach, recruiting volunteers through parishes, civic groups and media publicity.            
  3. Serves as the program’s media contact; answers reporter’s questions regarding changes in Immigration laws.  
  4. Provides outreach to the community.  Contacts and communicates with Afghan community, mosques, parishes, schools, community centers to educate them about the Immigration process and what services Catholic Charities Community Services has to offer. Coordinates and conducts seminars to provide information about Immigration services and workshops.
  5. Conducts interviews and secures all appropriate information and records to complete necessary forms for persons requesting immigration counseling; prepares case files for continued follow-up; maintains contact with clients to keep records up-to-date; requests documents for clients when necessary.  Maintains complete confidentiality of cases and abides by the ethical determinations of the attorney.
  6. Guides cases through all required phases of immigration procedures; submits necessary forms to USCIS on a timely basis; when necessary, makes contact with appropriate U.S. Consulate abroad;  informs USCIS and U.S. Consulates of any change in status or address of clients.
  7. Prepares cases for visa appointments and is responsible for seeing to it that all documentation is for visa appointment for Managing Attorney's review; records number of visa appointments sent out of our office; records numbers of successful visa applications that we have processed.
  8. Informs client of cost for immigration services, including the fees charged by the USCIS and the processing fees charged by the office. 
  9. Maintains accurate and complete records required for the immigration program; maintains statistical data on a daily basis and reports statistics on a monthly basis to the Managing Attorney; answers correspondence promptly and professionally; maintains accurate progress sheet on activities in client's case.  
  10. Prepares and submits monthly reports capturing all relevant outreach activities, data, and outcomes for required reports to funding source.
  11. Receives training and assists immigration specialists with updating database system (AARPODS/Salesforce) with case updates and outcomes to immigration applications, hearings, for individual clients. 
  12. Community outreach and networking; providing courtesy and respect to each client; insuring completeness and accuracy in preparing case records; maintaining the confidentiality of case records; providing accurate and complete advice to client; maintaining the accuracy of fees paid.                       
  13. Completes basic intake forms for clients; obtains accurate information on forms; explains to client the nature of the services we provide and program goals.
  14. Promote ongoing commitment to excellence and continual quality improvement to ensure the highest quality of services to our staff and clients. 
  15. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Job Requirements:

  1. Education /Background:  Minimum of a High School diploma or equivalent with at least four years of relevant experience required.   Must be fluent in either Dari, Farsi, or Pashto and English.  Must be able to work under supervision of an attorney.
  2. Job Knowledge:  Must possess interviewing and case recording skills; must have ability to learn immigration procedures and to obtain basic knowledge of the Immigration and Nationality Act as amended; must be fully bilingual in Dari, Farsi or Pashto and English; must be able to type accurately in both languages. Operates personal computer and maintains statistical data regarding the immigration program.  Must be able to learn and apply immigration law, must be able to work amid distractions.  Must be aware of the sensitive nature of the work and be cautious of potential ethical problems.  Must be sensitive to cultural differences within the agency and community.  Fluent in Microsoft Office Applications (Word & Outlook).
  3. Working Conditions/Physical Demands:   Flexibility in work schedule required. Must be willing to work nights and weekends when called for by Outreach Requirement. Must be able to stoop, bend, squat, sit on floor and ambulate over uneven floor surfaces including stairs and steps. When giving training will be standing most of the day. Must be able to visually and auditory assess and interact with clients to ensure their safety and wellbeing. Requires work outside of the office and driving. May lift up to 30 pounds. 
  4. Other requirements:
    1. Valid AZ driver’s license, reliable transportation and ability to show proof of registration/insurance.
    2. Level One Fingerprint clearance or ability to obtain fingerprint clearance; must maintain clearance.
    3. You must be 21 years of age or older to drive on behalf of Catholic Charities.


Hourly rate starting at $16.11 and may increase depending on experience.
