The Food Access and Nutrition Education Specialist I (Bilingual) provides nutrition education and food-related services to help clients meet their basic needs and empower clients to maintain a sustainable healthy lifestyle. The Food Access and Nutrition Education Specialist I (Bilingual) connects clients to relevant resources intended to increase income, food security, and family resilience. The Food Access and Nutrition Education Specialist I (Bilingual) also supports with outreach and response affected communities during times of disaster.

 

Essential Functions

  1. Conduct nutrition education services using trauma informed and culturally sensitive practices, maintain curriculum fidelity, and adhere to Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
  2. Assist with implementation of food distributions including client and volunteer engagement, training, and distributing of food.
  3. Learn and maintain in-depth knowledge of agency and partner resources.
  4. Liaise with program sites, community organizations, and Local Implementing Agencies (LIAs). Collaborate to recruit participants and implement program activities.
  5. Maintain documentation and enter data in DataLink as required.
  6. Participate in agency, state, and local trainings and workgroups to remain informed regarding up-to-date resources and information related to nutrition.
  7. Participate in Professional Development based on performance reviews and advancement of knowledge and skills in job related areas.
  8. Attend resource/health fairs, community events, and other “in person” opportunities for outreach and screening for needs as directed by the supervisor, including, but not limited to occasional weekends.
  9. Register and screen clients to help them meet their basic needs through referrals to programming across the agency, application for benefits, and/or referrals to external agencies.
  10. Support the Mission, Vision, and Values of Catholic Charities in the performance of all essential job functions and responsibilities.

Other Responsibilities

  1. Work with the Diocese of Santa Rosa and local parishes as appropriate and requested.
  2. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education, Experience, and Skills Required

  1. High School diploma required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree in nutrition-related field, related experience in nutrition-related field, preferred.
  2. Bilingual (English/Spanish), passing score on the Catholic Charities’ test of oral and written Spanish fluency required.
  3. Prior experience and understanding of the causes of poverty and vulnerability.
  4. Cooperative, friendly, and helpful attitude with clients and co-workers; understanding of people from diverse cultures and value systems.
  5. Ability to engage with and educate clients of diverse backgrounds in an interactive and culturally sensitive manner.
  6. Computer literacy required including experience with Microsoft 365 Suite.
  7. Strong written and verbal communication; organization, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills.
  8. Excellent interpersonal skills, cooperative, friendly, proactive, and helpful attitude with clients and co-workers. Ability to work closely with clients and other employees to ensure a positive and constructive environment within the program or department and throughout the Agency.
  9. Passion and enthusiasm for the mission of Catholic Charities and its clients.
  10. Valid driver license and at least state required minimum of automobile insurance, clear DMV driving record, and ability to provide own transportation. Must be willing and able to travel between agency sites.
  11. Must pass DOJ background clearance (fingerprinting) in accordance with the Diocese of Santa Rosa’s policies prior to start of employment.
