Job Details
The Medical Laboratory Technologist performs all procedures related to the pre-analytical, analytical, and post analytical processing of patient specimen, including the maintenance and quality control of test equipment. Cross-training is encouraged in all areas of the laboratory.
Responsibilities include:
- Accurately identify patient's specimens using two identifiers. Adhere to the specimen rejection policy. Specimens that do not meet acceptance criteria are promptly documented, investigated and brought to resolution as to cause of rejection.
- Perform and document all scheduled quality control and equipment maintenance including cleaning, calibrating, and monitoring humidity/temperature.
- Perform procedures accurately and according to policy completing testing within established turn-around-time for routine and STAT testing.
- Notify the Supervisor and Lead Technologist of IT issues with instrumentation and LIS.
- Call the HELP desk pertaining to computer system (i.e., Epic) problems.
- Adhere to all mandatory Infection Prevention Practices.
- Operates, calibrates, maintains and troubleshoots instruments required for performance of procedure. Rejects specimens, which do not meet the criteria. Assures telephone reports are given and documented as per protocol. Records all results accurately and legibly.
- Reviews all daily QC and workload. Assures all reports are completed in the specific time frame. Assures documentation of equipment maintenance to include temperatures, cleaning, calibrations, etc.
- Promptly takes corrective action for any out-of-control situations and documents as per section protocol. Keeps Supervisor aware of any section problems
- Reviews and verifies abnormal results and critical values.
- Handles inquiries from the Medical Staff pertaining to the Laboratory according to Department policy, reporting same to Supervisor.
- Assists in coordinating in the continuing education and training of both students and employees.
- Assists Supervisor in the completion of employees’ competency documentation and evaluating personnel performance.
- Assists Supervisor to assure section meets the standards as set forth by all Governing Agencies i.e. (DOH, JCAHO, OSHA, AABB).
- In absence of Supervisor, assumes Supervisor’s responsibility duties as necessary. Keeping Administrative Director informed of laboratory status.
- Orders supplies and maintains a complete inventory as per section protocol.
- Assists in coordinating the performance, distributions and response of all proficiency tests (i.e. NYS, WSH)
- Performs special studies or projects that are approved by the IRB when requested by supervisor.
- Assists in the evaluation of new methods and equipment to include cost and method analysis.
- Shows willingness to accept additional duties.
- Devotes attention and resources to provide the best customer service possible.
- Can rely on this employee to perform assignments as necessary.
- Utilizes all available resources to reach sound decisions.
- Assumes responsibility for problems and initiates actions to solve them.
- Works with others toward shared goals including participation in department problem-solving and improvement activities.

- Completes goals and assigned projects in a timely manner.
Qualifications include:
- B.S. Degree in Medical Technology, Biology, or the physical sciences.
- 3-5 years of Clinical Laboratory Experience.
- New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist License is required
Salary Range
USD $53.86 - USD $68.00 /Hr.
