Assistant Controller

Description Crain Communications seeks an experienced Assistant Controller to join its Financial Services team. This position is responsible for providing assistance to the VP of Finance in managing the global controllership operations of the organization including general ledger and fixed asset accounting, vendor payables, and accounts receivables & collections. Responsibilities Responsible for the monthly, quarterly and annual accounting close processes; ensure all closing deadlines are met and transactions are accurate. Prepare financial statements in compliance with GAAP. Obtain and maintain a thorough understanding of the company’s financial reporting and general ledger structure. Oversee the maintenance of the chart of accounts and departmental structure. Administers internal controls and audits of policies and procedures meant to preserve the organization’s assets. Develop and/or maintain formal written policies and procedures where applicable and communication to the organization accordingly. Responsible to automate and simplify internal processes and procedures within the controllership area. Monitor and ensure timely and accurate month-end balance sheet account reconciliations. Coordinate accounting for international entities; monitor and ensure timely reconciliation of intercompany accounts. Provides ad hoc analyses of the organization’s finances and prepare reports to facilitate decision-making. Establish and maintain weekly/ monthly cash forecasting process. Assist the VP of Finance in the daily banking requirements including overseeing the daily cash recs and monthly bank account reconciliations. Establish and maintain a capital expenditure tracking and reporting system. Interface with other departments to verify transactions and to resolve issues promptly. Advises staff regarding the handling of non-routine reporting transactions. Lead and direct the activities of the annual financial audit. Partner with the VP of Finance to ensure a clean and timely year end audit. Lead and supervise a staff of three functional managers and their staff. Work with direct reports to establish performance goals and objectives annually; provide semi-annual performance reviews on their progress to goal. Provide training to new and existing staff to enhance their professional development. Basic Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance Three or more years of public accounting experience OR five or more years of supervisory experience in financial reporting/ general ledger controllership activities Experience working in a fast-paced, mid-sized corporate environment Demonstrated ability to evaluate and streamline financial processes focusing on people, processes & technology Demonstrate the ability to multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines as required Excellent verbal and written communication skills Comfortable working with all levels of the organization Ability to identify and seek needed information / research skills Excel super-user Preferences CPA preferred Working knowledge / proficiency in Workday and Adaptive Insights This position is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not eligible for overtime pay. #finance #LI-Hybrid #LI-KL1 #mid #full-time Visit us at www.Crain.com @CrainComm Equal Opportunity Employer/Protected Veterans/Individuals with Disabilities The contractor will not discharge or in any other manner discriminate against employees or applicants because they have inquired about, discussed, or disclosed their own pay or the pay of another employee or applicant.
