Program Description

Michael’s Place provides transitional housing in a clinical setting to 18 homeless male veterans struggling with addiction disorders and/or mental health issues. The focus of the program is to assist veterans in finding a permanent place to call home while providing treatment for mental health and addiction issues. The program is funded through a Grant Per Diem contract with the Veterans Administration.

 

Position Description

The Mental Health Professional works independently and as part of a team to provide, individual psychotherapy, group therapy and ongoing case management services to veterans who are homeless and have mental health/substance use disorders. The position will also assist veterans in obtaining and maintaining permanent housing and connecting to resources that will enable them to stay stably housed.

Responsibilities

Provide treatment and case management for veterans that reside in the Michael’s Place transitional housing program.

  • Complete biopsychosocial assessments for residents enrolling in the program
  • Work with clients to develop individual service plans outlining treatment services and interventions that will be provided.
  • Provide individual therapy/group therapy to assist individuals in processing past trauma, develop coping strategies to mood disturbances, recovering from addiction and building social skills to create community connections.
  • Provide advocacy-based information and referral, including life skills, budgeting, jobs/education, crisis intervention and permanent housing search.
  • Ensure accuracy and maintenance of all client records, including service notes and outcomes; prepare reports as indicated by contracts. Ensure that proper documentation is maintained in residents' files. Enter data on clients into the local Homeless Management Information System.
  • Work with the Veterans Administration and local veterans service organizations to ensure residents have access to needed services.
  • Work with outside community providers to make resources available to veterans.
  • Assist clients with completing housing applications, and maintain relationship with subsidized and non-subsidized housing providers to assist clients in securing permanent housing.
  • Provide transportation for clients as needed/appropriate.
  • Ensure that Incident reports are written and given to the program manager for review.
  • Enter data into the Homeless Management Information System

Provide staff coverage and assist in day to day operations.

  • Interview, screen, and select qualified veterans for the program when vacancies arise in coordination with the Veterans Administration.
  • In collaboration with other staff, ensure rooms are ready for new residents.
  • Mediate disputes between residents.
  • Provide on-call staff coverage.
  • Administer drug screenings on resident per program guidelines.
  • Issue and enforce consequences when necessary for noncompliant residents.

Administrative and General Responsibilities.

  • Attend staff meetings, agency trainings, workshops, retreats, and in-service classes as scheduled.
  • Maintain accurate record of hours worked and turn in timesheets on schedule.
  • Contribute to and support a positive, team-oriented work environment; participate with other staff members in group decision-making process.
  • Maintain cleanliness and order of work area.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Promote the CCS Mission and programs in the community.

  • Network with other social service agencies to advocate for the program and clients; be available to educate and advocate in the community.
  • Treat clients in a culturally sensitive manner and actively seek to become informed on issues where culturally-determined perceptions may be significant.

Job Conditions

This position requires the employee to work in an environment where there may be exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and other potentially infectious material.  Other exposures could include cleaning supplies, bedbugs, chemicals involved in pest control, paint and other materials used in building maintenance, building temperature fluctuations, dust, noise, and odors.  Working conditions include interruptions, crisis response, and regular interactions with individuals who are dealing with issues of chemical dependency and/or mental illness, or are experiencing anger or frustration.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Meet or exceed qualifications for Mental Health Professional (as defined by WAC 388-877: a person with a Master’s in Social Work, OR with a Master’s degree in one of the social sciences along with two years of experience in direct services under the direct supervision of a mental health professional).
  • Registered Washington State Counselor
  • Experience with the U. S. Armed Forces.
  • Experience with crisis intervention.
  • Ability to work both as a member of a team and independently.
  • Reliable transportation, driver’s license, insurance and driving record that that meets CCS Employee Driving Policy requirement for driving agency vehicle and/or transporting clients. Proof of acceptable driving record (Driving Abstract-Complete driving record required to be provided by chosen candidate).

  • Criminal History Background Checks are required prior to employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least one year’s experience in working with individuals with substance use disorders.
  • Certified as a Chemical Dependency Professional (or Trainee).
