Job Description
Job Title: Bus Monitor Wage/Hour Status: Nonexempt
Reports to: Executive Director of Student Services Pay Grade: BD1
Dept./School: Transportation Number of Days: 180
Primary Purpose:
Assists CHISD School Bus Drivers in maintaining student discipline while the bus is in operation and tracks number of behavioral instances, severity of issues, and reports concerns to supervisor or student’s campus. Assists in seating assignments and the loading and unloading of students at pick up and drop off locations. Responsible for monitoring student behavior and implementing transit rules by working with individual campuses and the transportation management team. Often responsible for detailed care in the transportation of specialized or medically fragile students and expected to communicate with parents and guardians with a high level of customer service.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification
- Must possess a High School Diploma or equivalent GED
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must qualify following criminal checks in accordance with federal, state, and local guidelines
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Must be knowledgeable of school bus operations and the general mechanics of a school bus
- Ability to communicate with school age children in a productive, yet assertive manner
- Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with passengers, parents, the public at large, principals, teachers, administrators, and other staff members
- Ability to successfully complete all required testing requirements
- Ability to ensure safe transportation while in transit and maintain suitable discipline for all riders
- Ability to communicate effectively with dispatchers as needed
- Ability to decide the correct course of action in unusual or unfamiliar situations, especially when assistance or advice is unavailable
- Ability to lift twenty pounds
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions
- Ability to maintain a professional working relationship with bus drivers and student assistants
- Ability to pass random drug and alcohol tests

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Reports to work in a timely and consistent manner due to the nature of role; Monitor attendance is key to student safety and the reduction of behavioral issues and bus accidents
- Assists Bus Driver in maintaining expected student behavior on the bus in all age groups of riders. Will support safety initiatives by watching students and ensuring that safety guidelines are followed at all times
- Ensures that riders are aware of and abide by rules and safety guidelines
- Assists students with questions, concerns, or challenges as needed
- Consults with ,and assist,bus driver in documentation of student information, recordkeeping and completing route surveys; notes number of students at bus stops and stops that are no longer active
- Assist driver in assuring seat belts, harnesses and wheelchair clamps are secured as required.
- Assists parents and school personnel with safe loading and unloading of students; helps driver in blind spot situations and clears area before departure

Job Description
- Coordinates seating of pre-kindergarten students as required by State of Texas transportation guidelines
- Communicates with classroom aides, teachers, principals, and parents concerning student background, medical problems and behavior as appropriate or warranted
- Maintains current knowledge of Emergency Evacuation procedures
- Assists handicapped children on and off the bus and escorts children across street upon return home; lift children as required; assure responsible adult meets students leaving the bus
- Assists Bus Driver is doing bus checks to ensure no sleeping children are left unattended
- Attends in-service meetings and training courses as assigned
- Will be responsible for the assurance that sensitive information is handled appropriately with a full understanding of student privacy laws
- Required to report any known instances of child abuse or neglect to direct supervisor
- May be asked to substitute for teammate on occasion
- Duties are at all times subject to review, delegation, or reassignment
- Performs any related duties as required
Student Management:
- Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street.
- Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.
Other:
- Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with the transportation office.
- Work irregular hours as needed.
- Attend and complete required training programs to maintain safety certification.
- Keeps records on bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and number of passengers transported.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None.
Equipment Used:
- Bus safety equipment (flares, reflective signs), fire extinguisher.
Working Conditions
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Many of the assigned tasks require minimal physical requirements. Extended periods of time sitting and actively listening are required. Occasionally, essential to lift riders into car seats and wheelchairs onto bus lifts. Walking, twisting, and crouching are often required, as well as assisting with harnesses and seat belts.
