What would I be doing in this role?
Under general direction of the manager of the Spiritual Care Department, provides faith-specific and interfaith chaplaincy for Cedars-Sinai to meet the spiritual needs of patients, families, loved ones, and staff. Spiritual care includes conducting religious services throughout the year and collaborating in Cedars-Sinai's Hybrid Liaison model of religion-specific and interfaith provision of care. In this per diem role, your primary duties and responsibilities will be:
Providing Spiritual Care to Patients, their Families and Loved Ones:
- Perform spiritual assessment, and develop a spiritual care plan
- Deliver and arrange for spiritual care to patients, families, and loved ones through counseling, prayer, devotional materials, ritual/sacraments, resources, and supportive presence, for patients at all stages of illness and wellness
- Ensure a full continuum of evidenced-based spiritual care best practices in a way that is respectful of and sensitive to patient beliefs and values, as they understand them, and respectful of their cultural heritage
- Offer and provide as appropriate prayer and supportive presence, including end-of-life prayers for dying patients.
- Help arrange for contact with a patient's or family's own clergy, at their request, and facilitate appropriate access to the medical center for that clergy so that they may administer to the patient or family
- Be available on-call by phone and if appropriate, in person, outside of normal Medical Center business hours for emergencies that meet agreed-to criteria, except during vacations and appropriate absences
Providing Spiritual Care to CSMC Staff:
- Meet with CSMC staff members as appropriate to provide counseling about spiritual matters
- Offer support to CSMC staff who work in 8N through Tea for the Soul, individual counseling, and other programs as requested
- As time permits, offer prayer services, spiritual reflection groups and written inspirational materials to staff members
Assuming General and Administrative Spiritual Care Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with chaplaincy team to identify general spiritual needs of the CSMC community and develop plans to meet them
- Provide education to staff to enable them to offer medical care that is sensitive to the spiritual needs and traditions of patients, their families and loved ones
- Keep appropriate records of spiritual care provided to patients, their families and loved ones
- Distribute religious supplies such as literature for patients as appropriate
- Distribute materials that inform patients, families, loved ones, and staff of the availability of spiritual care and of how to access it
- Be respectfully available and sensitive to all patients, their families and loved ones and staff members who request spiritual care, and make referrals to the Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Interfaith, or Catholic chaplains for them as appropriate.
- Adhere to all Spiritual Care Collaborative Common Standards for Professional Chaplaincy and APC Standards of Practice
- Adheres to the positive actions and attitudes encouraged by our Spiritual Care Department Covenant.
Requirements:
- Graduate of accredited seminary or school of theology or other related education, training and experience
- Clinical training in chaplaincy required. Hospital chaplaincy certification desirable, including four CPE units.
- Demonstrated ability to be open, sensitive, flexible, and ecumenical
- Experience working with patients and families dealing with life-threatening illness and death
- Demonstrated ability to provide supervision and advocacy and to work cooperatively as a member of an interdisciplinary care team
Physical Demands:
Have mobility through the Medical Center facilities which are ADA accessible.
