Cedars-Sinai is dedicated to being the international leader in pancreatic research through its advances in prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer, pancreatitis and diabetes. The Pancreatic Research group focuses on mechanisms of pancreatic diseases such as pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. The work often involves other organs including the liver, or cultured cells. As a Research Associate II, you will support the overall program goals and strategy of the Pancreatic Research Group, which may include significant laboratory activities such as performing models of pancreatitis in live animals (mice and rats), maintenance and breeding of mouse colonies, cell culture procedures using primary and immortalized cell lines, RNA and protein analysis, transfection studies. The candidate will have broad molecular and cellular biology experience. Previous experience with experimental animals and animal surgery will be considered a plus. Excellent verbal, presentation, and written communication skills are essential and the capability to effectively work in a team environment is required. Working under direct supervision, you will perform routine and increasingly complex laboratory tasks and procedures and develops technical expertise in one or more areas relevant to research projects. You will participate in research activities involving all aspects of the research process, to include, but not limited to - investigation, technical, testing/validation of results, and report findings. You will also perform a variety of routine experimental protocols and procedures to support the objectives of laboratory research projects. You will observe and comply with safety standards and procedures, assist in preparation of data for publication and/or presentation at scholarly meetings, and assist in general laboratory maintenance. This position does not have supervisory responsibilities. Note: flexibility to work on weekends if required Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Performs a variety of increasingly complex experimental protocols and procedures and assist in the design of new complex or unusual protocols and techniques. Keeps accurate and detailed records of experiments and results, and assist in identifying and troubleshooting of unexpected results. Orders laboratory supplies and supports laboratory operations. Maintains lab equipment and related records and may coordinate use of lab equipment. Assists in the operation of specialized equipment, as required by the area of research. Assists in preparation of data for publication and/or presentation at scholarly meetings. Observes and complies with safety standards and procedures. Orients research laboratory assistants or lower level research associates and undergraduate student researchers on day-to-day lab operations and routine procedures. Department-Specific Duties and Responsibilities: This position involves working with live mice. Performs mouse breeding procedures. Performs mouse models of pancreatitis under supervision. Isolates primary cells from mouse and human pancreas. Performs mammalian cell culture and transfection/transduction if required. Performs RNA/DNA analysis techniques (e.g. qPCR, gel electrophoresis, nucleic acid purification). Performs protein expression analysis techniques (e.g. protein concentration determination, Western Blot, ELISA, Luminex, spectrophotometric assays, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence). Assist other members of the laboratory in procuring human surgical specimens. Education : Bachelor's degree in a Science related field, required. Bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Immunology or related field is preferred. Experience and Skills: One (1) year of research laboratory experience, required. Understanding of general research objectives. Familiar with routine laboratory procedures, experimental protocols, and overall lab organization. Ability to work independently. Must have superior interpersonal, communication and organization skills and the ability to work across company disciplines and functional units, and computer application experience. Must possess computer skills to include, but not limited to, Excel and Word. Ability to simultaneously manage multiple clerical trials, and attention to details. Physical Demands: Able to perform moderate lifting (up to 30 pounds). Able to sit, stand and walk for prolonged periods of time. Able to read papers and online documents. Able to operate standard office equipment. Able to exercise physical ability and perspective acuity to satisfactorily perform essential job functions.
