Job Summary
The Dredge Operator operates the dredge in a safe and efficient manner and uses acquired skills to dredge sand from pond-filled pits.
This job interfaces, on a daily basis, with the rest of the operations in this location. The employee holding this job must perform the work activities in a correct, accurate and timely manner.
Job Responsibilities
- Become familiar with assigned equipment and recognize potential maintenance problems by sight and sound and inform supervisory personnel
- Carry out minor repairs and adjustments
- Assist maintenance personnel with repairs and preventive maintenance
- Make sure dredge has an adequate supply of tools, fire extinguishers, first aid supplies and safety equipment
- Be able to correctly change or repair various teeth from cutter heads
- Be familiar with correct moving procedures from moving dredge to actually mining
- Become familiar with necessary lubrication of moving part on dredge
- In a safe and efficient manner be able to operate a workboat with motor
- Be able to operator under training from lead man, loader operator, and supervisor for running a smooth and safe production
- Operate controls and levers to hoist, drag and swing, cutter head for efficient productivity from banks of the pond
- At times welding may have to be performed to combat breakdowns
- Work under direction of Leadman and Manager
- Maintain good housekeeping of the equipment
- Replace or assist other workers as needed or directed
- Adhere to all CEMEX, OSHA, and MSHA rules and regulations at all times
- Wear proper safety equipment while on plant grounds
- Meet or exceed company safety standards
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned by management
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Prior experience required with similar or same equipment or machinery
- Bilingual (a plus)
- High School Diploma or equivalent

- Bi-lingual (a plus)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Prior experience required with similar or same equipment or machinery
- Ability to carry out not only simple, but complex oral and written instructions and deal with problems from standardized situations and work experience
- Have mechanical aptitude
- Be capable of working in all weather conditions
- Ability to perform basic logging and documenting functions
- Ability to read English sufficiently and be able to comprehend information contained in manuals, regulations and reports
- Ability to speak English with others via two-way radio
- Basic mechanical knowledge to detect potential breakdown of equipment
- Ability to detect safety hazards and equipment malfunctions and respond accordingly
- Be familiar with and obey all company working practices and Federal Safety Regulations
- Ability to detect safety hazards and equipment malfunctions and respond accordingly
- Ability to communicate well with supervisors, welders, leadmen, other Mechanics, maintenance personnel, co-workers and outside contractors
- Ability to work Night Shift (12 hours per day, 4 nights per week, 5pm-5am)
Working Conditions
- Capable to work extended hours as needed
- Continuous exposure to extreme heat, extreme cold, extreme noise, and working outdoors
- Must wear protective equipment while at the location
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to perform all job functions which include, but may not be limited to walking, sitting, lifting, pushing, pulling, turning, climbing to a significant degree, and / or pulling of controls
- Heavy Work : Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 50 pounds or force frequently, and / or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, in order to communicate to employees / visitors as well as function safely around
- Must pass DOT physical to include back x-ray, hearing test and drug / alcohol screen
