Job Title: Peer Specialist


Job Summary:

CASES is currently seeking a Peer Specialist for our Pretrial Services team. By developing meaningful relationships with our participants through relatability and persistence the Peer Specialist role will meet the participants where they are with extensive services within the community. The Peer Specialist will be expected to work collaboratively with the rest of the team to generate and implement ideas for effective engagement tactics to ensure the participant is compliant with the Supervised Release criteria. This role requires engagement with the participants both at the office and in the community.

Salary:
The salary range for the Peer Specialist is $47,500-$52,000 per year.

Shift Hours:
The Peer Specialist is full time Monday to Friday 9am-5pm.

Location Address:
151 Lawrence Street Brooklyn, NY 11201.

Workplace Flexibility:
CASES offers various work arrangements, where possible for certain roles. The Peer Specialist position is in person.


What you will be doing:
  • Engagement of participants enrolled in pretrial services.
  • Complete WRAP plans to assist other staff in developing holistic and comprehensive assessments.
  • Support and facilitate the transition of youth and adults with mental health or substance use problems.
  • Assessment of needs and identification of appropriate services.
  • Linkage to income support and health insurance.
  • Progress note writing in electronic record.
  • Provide trauma-informed care and services.
  • Delivery of gender specific services.
  • Plan and deliver case management and peer support services that address risk factors for criminal recidivism.
  • Carefully use self-disclosure as an intentional strategy to support participant engagement and recovery.
  • Provide crisis intervention services and know how to intervene during a crisis.
  • Understand the legal framework of pretrial services.
  • Understand and deliver culturally competent services.
  • Advocacy skills – supporting participants to navigate and access housing, income support, treatment, medical care, civil legal services, self-help and other community services and supports.
  • Utilize the SOAR model SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access, and Recovery model to support homeless clients and those at risk of homelessness successfully receive eligible sources of income.
  • How to effectively utilize clinical supervision.
  • How to empower participants to know their rights and responsibilities and to utilize procedures to ensure their rights are protected.
  • Learn how to use motivational interviewing techniques when providing services.
  • Learn how to address risk factors for criminal recidivism to support participants to achieve recovery goals.
  • How to use recovery principles, delivery recovery-oriented services and use Wellness Recovery Action Planning (WRAP) as a strategy and intervention to support participants to learn how to manage recovery from mental illness and substance use problems.

What we are looking for:
  • High School Diploma or Equivalency degree.
  • Certification as a Peer Specialist,
  • Satisfactory completion of a recognized Peer Training program with externship experience preferable.
  • Minimum of one year of experience providing peer services in a social services program, providing direct services to individuals, families and/or groups, preferably in a field-based setting.
  • Experience with forensic, legal system or field-based mobile treatment teams strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of community-based resources and support services for vulnerable individuals.
  • Highly motivated self-starter, able to translate goals into action and deliver successful outcomes.
  • Candidates who are justice-impacted or identify as having lived experience in various support systems are encouraged to apply.

Preferred Skills
:
  • Certified Recovery Coach (CARC) or Certified Recovery Peer Advocate (CRPA) strongly preferred.
