Position Summary

City of Hope partners with diverse community organizations and advocates to reduce cancer burden and disparities risk. We achieve our goal by several activities e.g., promoting screening, pathways to care, and increasing healthy eating, the adoption of evidence-based nutritional practices, and helping families and communities create an environment that supports healthy lifestyles. Our work targets three interrelated domains: research to determine the best means to prevent cancer, reduce risk and increase screening; community-based interventions that translate research into practice; and policy recommendations.

 

The Health Education Specialist will play a central role in the development and coordination of partnerships and deliverables as related to community-based projects.   The position requires public health knowledge and experiences, program planning, implementation, evaluation, curriculum design as well as excellent analytical, interpersonal, organizational, and writing skills all focused around community based/public health education.  

 

City of Hope utilizes a staff leadership model and every employee is expected to take leadership role in the department, including active involvement on a department work team. Employee will also be expected to actively participate in 1) marketing the department and department products and services; 2) educational and group programs 3) program development 4) outreach to other City of Hope departments, families, and the community.

 

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Plans and coordinates health and cancer education curriculum, workshops, classes and services for families and the community.
  • Facilitates, implement and monitor health studies, programs and services
  • Assist in developing presentations, papers, grants, and deliverables to support project priorities.
  • Serves as resource to the internal and external community in identifying educational, health disparities, SDH materials, and marketing of program services.
  • Actively participate on work teams and other priority initiatives.

 

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Health Education, Public Health, Health Sciences, Health Promotion or Community Education.
  • 1 year of professional Health Education experience, 1 year of experience working with patients.

 

Required Certification/Licensure:

  • Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) or obtain within six months of hire.

 

Preferred education experience and skills:

  • Master of Public Health, Health Education, Nutrition, or related field.
  • Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) or MCHES
  • Health educator experience in community education with public health, community/non-profit or school settings.
