Employee Supervision and Lead Responsibilities
Under direction from the Produce Assistant Manager, ensures the produce department operates effectively and efficiently by providing work direction to Produce Clerks; facilitates day-to-day operations and helps guarantee performance standards are met.
In collaboration with the Produce Assistant Manager, creates, develops, communicates, implements, audits, and evaluates operating standards and procedures.
Effectively communicates expectations for Produce Clerks during shift to meet department standards and business needs. Utilizes processes, procedures, and systems to ensure expectations are met, create accountability within the department, and offer support to meet those expectations.
Helps facilitate training for new employees.
Facilitates team meetings and huddles in the absence or at the request of the Produce Assistant Manager.
Product Handling, Display and Processing
Receive product when it arrives from distributors and vendors, ensuring order delivery accurately reflects invoice.
Stock, rotate, face, and clean produce items, including the removal of culls, in all display areas on sales floor and the back stock area, per procedure and as directed.
Maintain the cleanliness of display areas on sales floor and back stock area per procedure.
Order product and verify and code invoices per procedure, as needed
Build attractive and vibrant displays in line with department standards
Customer Service
Creates a friendly and welcoming environment by acknowledging and/or greeting customers within work area.
Answer customer questions and make product recommendations based on individual customer needs and lifestyle.
Creates a uniquely valuable shopping experience and more fully engages our customers by seeking out information and assistance from others to meet customer needs and exceed customer expectations.
Talks knowledgeably to customers about produce including it's uses, sourcing, storage, and tasting notes
Other Duties
Train other employees in department processes and procedures as directed.
Assist other produce clerks and staff in other departments as directed.
Perform other duties as directed.
Essential Qualifications
Prior produce experience, preferably in a retail grocery setting.
Previous supervisory experience.
Previous customer service experience.
Ability to consistently, effectively, and respectfully listen and communicate with customers from our diverse community with different needs, as well as co-workers.
Ability to read, understand and apply various documents such as a department manual, standard operating procedures, employee handbook, union contract, etc.
Ability to prioritize work tasks and maintain focus in a fast paced environment.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Valid WA State Food Worker Card.
Ability to work early mornings, weekends, and evenings.
Physical Demands
Required frequently: Working in cool, cold and wet environments, walking, standing, lifting and grasping above the shoulders, kneeling, squatting, bending, reaching, and repetitive wrist movement and fine hand manipulation when trimming and cutting produce.
Will be required to use hand trucks, carts, and step stools to stock product, as well as box cutters and knives.
